There is corruption in the city, the rule of law has grown so strong that evil hides behind its protections and uses it against the good and the weak. We can't stop evil by hiding friends, or by simple letter writing anymore.
But you can sign your name in support of something. My petition for Council and the Mayor.
1). A clear ban on torture by the Watch, Tigereyes, and Spellguard. Too often people are tortured, and no one can speak for those who are. Make this law clear, and what's more a civil servant must be stationed at the Watch house to ensure the safety of those arrested.
2). No more warrantless or purposeless arrests. All arrests must occur as the result of a warrant or for a clear violation of the law which must be explained to the individual arrested. Arrest wands must be used as a last resort, allow people the dignity of turning themselves in or walking to the watch house.
3). Trial by jury. We demand that our peers oversee our trials. Two citizens shall sit on ever court, picked at random by the citizen's stone. A councilor can conduct a trial, but our peers can veto him if both agree.
4). Watchmen are here to keep the peace, and not to inflict war on citizens. Ban the use of edged weapons for patrolling watchmen. Only during assaults on the city do they need weapons of war; while on patrol they are to go unarmed or carry clubs for their protection.
5). The right of records. All fines, all punishments levied by judge or Watchmen must be recorded in writing with the finee's signature as well as the watchman and civilian official overseeing. This will allow finees to maintain record of their fines, and ensure the Watch do not propose excessive fines.
6). The right of appeal. Any citizen who feels they are unduly fined or punished by the Watch shall by law be able to appeal to a neutral body of citizens to appeal their sentence or punishment. The will of the people, not the lay of the law shall be our final court of opinion.
