This is the first entry in a journal that has been pieced together with Rothe leather book binding and campaign papers found strewn around the streets of Sanctuary. The ink and quill appear to be of good quality however.
Well, I am alive. Where to start. I have been in this town called Sanctuary for about a week. I am still not sure what has happened and I am less sure of where I am at. Noone else seems to know what hell we're in as well.
The last thing I remember about the surface: A band of head hunters and myself are chasing our bounty prize through a hilly forest. We tracked him down to one of many caves. We were slowing and cautiously coming down one hill and saw the entrance and that was it.
The first thing I remember about here: I am lying on my back. It's cool and slightly humid. It's dark but that doesn't matter. I can see fine except for the cloud of dust that fills the tunnel. I'm in a cave. No wait. It's a mine. There are a couple of other people I don't know around. Dwarf, human. The damn human we were chasing. Well no time for that now...They look just as confused as I do.
I have something in my hand. A pick. I look around as the dust is starting to settle. I see a huge slab of what appears to be the tunnel ceiling collapsed on top of some sort of creature in strange robes. He looks like a small octopus attached to a lithe, humanoid body. His tentacles flail in all directions as do one of his undamaged limbs. This goes on for several moments. Death throes. I've seen it all too many times.
After we all stop looking in wonder we all turn to look at each other. "Let's get the nine hells out of here!" I say. The dwarf is quick to tell us what we need to do. We move up the tunnel over the rubble and the earth starts shaking again. The tunnel holds this time with the exception of some flecks of rubble falling. "We got tuh git owtuh 'ere, NOW!" the dwarf bellows out. We make it up the tunnel. The tunnel is linked to other side tunnels via a larger main tunnel. The dwarf tells us which way to go and that he is "sure as stone" that going up will get us out. We move. 40 feet up we hear.....
