Under"Light"?

Alright, I asked this question.

"Why is the Underdark so bright I can walk around without a torch with my human?"

I was told.

"People complained, turn down your gamma and its fine."

I'm curious, who complained so I can beat them with a sock filled with hot nickles? Personally, I'd suggest keeping the whole bloody place dark. Darkvision should be a commodity, and torches a necessity.

I could always just turn down my gamma; but I'd rather not.

The Underdark wilderness areas are quite dark, such that torch and darkvision are quite needed.

Many of the quest areas/town areas are lighter, but I'll probably turn it down some. It's one of those things that you can't keep everyone happy with.

Yes, I'm more hoping to get a feel for the "majority" opinion. I'd have set a poll if I could have really.

Yes, it is very dark in the wilderness. I almost got eaten my a Deep Lizard when roaming outside because I couldn't see where I was running. I kept bumping into walls and the like.

This is good. It should be that dark.

Screen glare can be a bastard though.

It's pretty dark in the wilds, and I got Darkvision.

At least in my experience with the toolset, the darkest environments you can make in NWN you can still see through pretty well without a torch or darkvision.

Nah, you can make it pitch black if you really try too. :P

Please do. I dont want a bunch of humans walking arond without a torch. A group of us went out last night and only I carried a torch.

Voular Nah, you can make it pitch black if you really try too. :P

Yeah. Voular is right.

Infact, it's possible to make it so dark that even torches and light spells have little to no effect.

I agree with Oroborous.

Personally, I liked it back the way it was. I was actually able to see the map and amount of detail put into the city, etc. I was willing to ignore realism for the sake of being able to see that and where I'm going as well.

I don't much care either way as it's not a horribly big deal.

"Torches need friends too. Keep it company and carry one with you today."

i think it would make sense for upper sanctuary to have wall mounted light sources, but generally those should be the only sources of light. lower sanctuary should have an even darker feel, and yes i agreeoutside the city should be considerably darker so that the racial vision benefits are more tangible.

It would be nice if EFU had a personal light source other than a torch.

Wood is scarce in the Underdark, so personal light sources such as a bottled bioluminescent fish on the end of a stick or a jug of glow worms would be much more logical.

No idea how you could do it though. Maybe a scripted one use item that provides the light radius for X amount of time before your light source dies. Of course, such a thing would duly assume a low priority on the to do list, but I'd like to see something like this eventually.

Call me fussy, but it would be much better to have a dim blue light radius rather than a large yellow one.

It's little touches like this that makes the setting all more immersive.

Actually, I've been planning on adding some alternate light sources in. Should be easy enough.

it would be interesting to see cheap enough alternatives that make sense for the underdark that have weaker light radius than torches then selling torches at a much higher price, 50 gold maybe, changeing the item description to reflect how they are really only found by the misfortune of adventurers who end up in the underdark and part with them by one means or another.

I haven't had the pleasure of trying the server yet, but since the whole setting is in the Underdark it would get a bit monotone if every single area was pitch black. I can understand that the wilderness areas are dark, but since magic exist in FR mages could easily make Sanctuary constantly bright as day if they so wished. The reason drow cities are dark is because they like it like that, of course. I just think it would be nice to have some areas where you could actually see something outside of the torch's reach.

And my monitor is sucky, so I have both it and the game's setting close to max >_> It's fine to not see anything in the wilderness, but to be able to find the doors in the city would be nice ;)

Hmm... Are you sure about that?

I'm inclined to disagree.

I'm personally for the way it used to be, but since so many people are inclined to have it be near pitch black in most places just keep in mind that your character's submerged in near total darkness as well, meaning it'd likely be damn hard to see anything or anyone and determine specific details unless they had some sort of light source or vision enchantment.

One thing to keep in mind is that when living in constant gloom/darkness, your eyes adapt to it. So if Sanctuary isn't as well-lit as the surface (which I don't believe to be the case at all), the darkness of the Underdark wouldn't seem as dark as it would if you had just popped down from the surface somewhere, as long as there's at least some light for your eyes to see.

That's fine. But I'd rather not see people telling me "I know it was you because you were wearing the tunic with the criss-crossed stitching, your eyes are blue and I could tell the exact hue of your inconspicuous helmet was brown NOT black."

That is, unless the DMs dictate different ;)

Exactly! That's why I wanted to see the change. I looked around town, saw NO one carrying torches or light sources. They should have to do it to see details and things.

Ladocicea Hmm... Are you sure about that?

There is a spell called Daylight for one, and it's just a level 2 spell as well. And any mage can research a better one as he sees fit. Anyway... I'm just pro having a light-ish Sanctuary myself (not like a surface town, though).
