Sealed letter to Sheriff Walters

Good Sheriff Walters,

I first off thank you and the watch collectively for your efforts in keeping those within the walls of Sanctuary safe, it is your vigilance that ensures our lives are able to continue in such a dark and oppressive place. I have heard more than one person commend your efforts here with the watch, so I am certain that the event I will relate to you may concern you. I, unfortunately, am the bearer of news that may present cause for alarm if left untouched and unaddressed.

I and a few others within the city answered the need of two children who forayed into the old gnomish ruins and had not returned. The guard at his post recognized he let the children through, and had knowledge of their extended absence. Though I am certain your regulations do not permit him to leave his post, as it should be, the mere fact that he either did not notice the children enter, or was indifferent to them entering an guarded thus is certainly concerning. If he did not see the children enter, what might he might not have seen come out. And if he did see them enter, as I believe he did, is he perhaps indifferent to the safety of those within the city—which is certainly against any oaths I am sure are taken to defend the lives of those within.

Unfortunately though one boy was found a girl has died, half devoured at the hands of imps and other assorted infernal creatures. In the course of the battle we had, we discovered by their own admissions they desired to eat the flesh of those of our city. Certainly we can have no Sanctuary from the evils and dangers without our walls, and even within, should actions such as this continue. I certainly do not want this threat to spread, nor do I desire the panic that may ensue if it should be found out that such a threat was so easily accessible by the young of the city. As it remains currently, I alone have written you of this, and the wizard accompanying me has written the spell guard as well of the issue, as the summons and tools used to grant these beings access may be within their purview. I am certain that the appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken with regards to the private on duty at the ruin site yesterday.

Again I thank you for your service, and for your continued struggle to keep Sanctuary what it was named to be. Should you have need of contacting me in any way, feel free to send a message to the Rock Bottom Inn.

May the Dawn shine on you sir, Graylen Haynes, Paladin in the service of Lathander.

Sergeant Fezlkirn plucks the sealed letter out of the day's mail at the Watch House, and drops it on top of the bundle of mail to be delivered directly to the Sheriff's office.

After determining that the events stated in the report took place in the uninhabited Dunwarren ruins and that the children in question were not related to anyone important, Sheriff Walters tosses the letter aside to be forgotten.

Sergeant Sheps comes upon the letter while cleaning up the Sheriff's office. After looking it over briefly, he mutters something under his breath and pens a quick reply, which he stamps with the Watch seal and sends to the Rock Bottom Inn.
