A letter and a package is delivered to the Spellguard enclave. The letter is written with elegant script, and reads:
Most esteemed sirs,
I write this letter to inform you of a possible threat to the city. Perhaps a minor threat at the whole, but a threat nontheless. Yesterday, word reached us of two children gone missing in the eastern Svirfneblin ruins, and we set out to bring the poor things back before they were harmed by the many possible dangers there. We soon found the first child, a little boy. When we approached him, however, he cried that his sister had been taken away by 'monsters'. After seeing to his safe return, we entered the house he had directed us to, and quickly became aware that these 'monsters' were really mephits. And the caverns under the house crawled of the foul buggers. We had to fight our way through them every step of the way; it was quite dreadful.
At any rate, we after a while entered a spacious room, and to our distress, we found there the body of the poor, poor girl. That is not all, however, for she lay next to a foul devise, a fully functionable circle of summoning, from which apparently the mephits and their ilk originated. The portal was controlled by a lever, magically connected to the pentagram on the ground. We quickly used the lever to close the portal, then jammed it, rendering it useless. The fact that it was there at all, however, and fully functional, is somewhat distressing.
What is more, on our way back out, I managed to find a diary of sorts, left on a bookshelf. The book is in a very poor condition, missing most of its pages, and written in what I guess must be the language of the svirfneblin, which I have no knowledge of, but perhaps some insight regarding the creators of this portal can be won by studying it. In addition to this letter I have also sent you the book for you to further study, to perhaps find out if this is just an old remnant of the ancient Svirfneblin settlement, or something more recent. If it is, indeed, of a more recent nature, it is probably a threat to the safety of this city, and nontheless, a magical contraption of that magnitude might very well attract unwanted attention.
I hope you find this information to be useful in your constant struggle to keep Sanctuary safe, and if you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me; I can be reached at the Rock Bottom establishment.
With respect and wishes of a continuous success with the safe-keeping of our city,
Eredian ap-Maermarryn, diviner
