Sharing information about areas

What is the DM teams stance on how a character should share information about areas explored? Say for example my character goe s to xyz area that is hostile and records a map from memory.

Now I'm thinking that taking screenshots of maps and pins would be prohibited and bad taste but..are they? I know it would be nigh impossible for someone to remember and draw out an area in such detail without spending a great deal of time there.

I was going to hand draw a map on paper or mspaint and only mark key areas ("x shop is here, encountered giant bloodsucking pigs here" etc)

Thanks for feedback./

I vastly prefer stylish maps (or even MS Paint ones) to screenshots of the minimap. Some of our characters have made really impressive maps using Photoshop and other good image editing programs, and that's totally encouraged. Keep in mind several points:

  • Areas outside Sanctuary change, frequently. The Underdark is not a static environment. Even with a good map, you may still get lost.
  • Please don't map quest areas (areas prefixed with QA) and "special areas" (areas prefixed with @).
I am going to be adding an in-game "Mapmaking Kit" soon, although I'm currently reconsidering precisely how we want to handle that.
