In lieu of the fact that all scripted skill checks are broken right now (including dice bag rolls), Someone gave me a great idea in-game of how to decided pecking order for loot after quests.
Bash a door!
The rolls for bashing a door use a d20 so all you have to do is take a swing at it without a weapon and see what each person rolled with their d20. Now their modified score might change based on spells, weapons and so on, so you have to ignore the modified total that determines if you hit or miss. Just look at the d20 roll.
I can't remember who in-game came up with this idea, but it's a really good one and I'd like to thank them for a creative work around!

You're welcome.
I also noticed that the tarot cards for sale in Sanctuary still work, but I don't know if the cards drawn are broadcast to other PCs. If not, there is always the honor system...

Or you could work it out by talking, rather than dice rolls. I hate doing that.

I don't really see dice rolling as something which should be done by default, as it often is now. It really depends on the character. I know that both Praetorius and Skret simply took what they wished, and anyone who objected was told they could have the items if they could pry it from his dead hands. I've also seen paladins let the rest of the group take everything, including the pay, simply happy for helping out. I once saw a Beshaban who subdualed the rest of us for rolling and praying to Tymora for luck with the dice!
This isnt a general rule or anything, but I also find that evil groups will often let items which a particular person can put to use have them. For example, I was in a group consisting of primarily good aligned/neutral characters a few weeks back, and as always such a group was quite large (8 people). Some really good leathers which gave bonuses to Hide and MS were found, and there was only one rogue in the group. Everyone rolled, and the fighter in full plate got them. Every evil group I've been in, and thats a few, are usually smaller in number, and almost always shell out the equipment to those who can actually put it to use, and I beleive this is why most evil characters are generally suited out with better loot, on average, when compared to good aligned characters.
My advice is to play your character. If rolling for everything and then taking the best thing, regardless iof whether or not you can use it is the IC thing to do, then cool! If not, try other ways around it. Negotiate, even!

That absalutely drives me nuts when that happens. It's so insanely annoying because of the "luck of the system". There are times, when you know said item is going to end up in the Walders shop 10 mins later. Same with scrolls that are "gathered up" and sold to walders because she pays a tiny bit of cash for them. Sell them to wizards who'll sometimes pay a fortune...

Agreed. If a fighter ends up with the good leathers simply because he/she got the first pick and that is the best piece of loot, what will he/she do with it? Probably end up selling it anyway. And since, if it's decent the merchants wont take it, it will have to be to a player. Just cut out the middle man. It only makes sense to base the loot hand out on a few things. Need and effort. You are a rogue that could use that armor, ok, take it. Now if you are a rogue that could use it but contributed little or indangered the group on more than one occasion, maybe another courrse of action may be taken. Maybe the leathers but no gold or something like that.

This post wasnt to start a debate on whether you should or shouldn't use dice rolls to decide pecking order for loot, but rather to provide a workaround for those teams/groups who do decide to use dice rolls for picking order.

true enough dj but the debate is relivent enough any way and yeah i agree let those that can use something have it who knows the next time you end up in a group together that person using that equipment may beable to save your charactors ass

I'm not debating if it's wise or good sportsmanship to give class/race specific items to the appropriate players, I was just saying that I think that's a discussion that deserves its own thread.
