I was just thinking about how we all could IC the server crash into the EfU module and Sanctuary's ongoing plots.
My thoughts were this:
In the wake of Breens spider invasion of Sanctuary (for those of you who missed it, 2 days before the server crashed Sanctuary was invaded by hundreds of spiders in a DM event), with the city recovering from the damage, and the mourning of dozens of lost loved ones, the inhabitants fell into a deep slumber (the server crash). When they awoke they found themselves alive, but something about the city wasn't quite right. The Watch reported that the gates, though constantly locked, had were found to be open and massive amounts of footprints and creature tracks were found leading in and out of the city. No one could put their finger on it, but everyone knew that something had transpired within the city walls while they slept.
Who had the power to make an entire city sleep? Why did they leave us all alive? Were they looking for something? Why would they leave a note on the Rock Bottom door reading:
"Of all the cities in these lands, yours has intrigued us most"
A cryptic message for certain and yet another mystery of Sanctuary begins...........
I really think this crash could help give a new direction to who or what new threat faces the city. I won't toss out suggestions as to who or what i had in mind, because the DM's will of course be able to come up with something creative I'm sure, but I just thought I'd toss out this idea for them and the rest of the community.

Uh... since none of us have been logged in while the server has been down, I don't see any reason to make up an "IC explanation" for the downtime.
Because there's nothing to explain, ICly.

I don't see why we should RP it. The time just froze at the moment of the crash and that's it. Also, if we start RPing that, how about server resets? Why does suddenly everyone teleport back to an inn?

We just need to correct the date, and put it a few days back accordingly.

Yeah, I'm echoing the posts above. Though your idea seems very interesting!

Actually, I think the date's correct now, seeing as we were set back some 3 days in the beginning of Alturiak.

That got corrected back then, I think. I don't know. The date's confusing. :?

Nope, they decided to ignore it. IIRC, it's because changing the date isn't overly trivial.
I blame those extra days for our largely incompetent council. But that's just me. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see this idea as a "oh dear, we have to come up with a plausible excuse for it IG" as much as a "hey, guys, wouldn't it be neat if..." post. And a situation like this one is certainly very easily adapted to a plot such as the one suggested on a 24/7 server. It would be very tricky to implement at any other time, and it would be a metaplot involving most players on the server initially, giving everyone the chance to pursue it. So please don't just discard the idea as something useless before giving it a second glance, at least.

That is exactly the meaning of this post.

Couldn't be more true. The only time you could introduce a new plot of a mysterious nature that the ENTIRE community could latch onto would be now, since the server crash affects everyone, you could tag a future event onto it!
Three (the unease of the citizens, the watch's observation of the gate, the note on RB) of the four key details (the slumber being the 4th) can be handled through posts on the forums in the Town Notices section or through a flyer attached to the side of the RB in-game. So very easy to start this plot line off.
We have the Lizardfolk, the Trogs, Orogs, Drow, Duergar, Illithids, Beholders and goblins all with an uneasy balance with Sanctuary. Who's to say that there isn't another race that is more powerful than all of the above, observing us as well? Who or what they are and whether they are manevolent or benevolent or not is totally up to the DM's, but I just thought I would insert that idea into their brains as food for thought.
Hell, with so many enemies of Sanctuary, maybe this could be the DM's chance to give the city a group that wants to HELP them. Maybe celestials, or people from another continent other than Faerun, or maybe ninja teddy bears from the blue lagoon (ok ignore that last one). My point is that the DM's and the community have a pretty unique opportunity here to introduce a brand new, wide-sweeping long range plot that could be pretty cool if they are interested.
I just wanted to get feedback from the community as to whether or not they would be interested in pettioning the DM's for such a new plot.

Who's trying to explain them? I'm just taking this opportunity to add suggest something interesting and think this is the perfect time to do so.
If you don't like the idea, then just say so, that's why I posted it here.

I think the overall idea is good, just have to get a dm to put it into motion.

Although the idea is good, putting into action I wouldn't recomend, for one thing, not all the players read the forums, so right away, only about half the server would bother Rping it. Secondly, not all PC's stay in sanctuary, some stay in the blue mushroom, thoose PC's would not be subject to the effects of the attack. Although the idea is good, it's best not to overcomplicate things, so I think it's best just to ignore the server crash in terms of RP

Me either.
I'd rather ooc things left as ooc situations. IC explanations may clash with all sorts of plots that are going on at the moment.

Nero's got a point : It would be lame to meet someone ingame and say : what do you think of that massive attack that made everyone sleep
and here the other dude answer
Huh attack huh?
Then you have to explain why the other is being a retard even with if he could be a mage with Int 18.

And to poke another hole in this idea (sorry!), if it was a magical sleep then surely the elven population of Sanctuary would'nt have been affected? Also seconding all of the other reasons for this not happening.

We pretty much have a situation here that won't reoccur in a very long time. How about, instead of busying yourselves shooting a creative idea down, you pause for a moment, and discuss the possibilities the situation offers, to see if anything interesting can be done with it? Even if you don't like/see logical problems with this particular suggestion, I'm sure you can come up with all sorts of interesting notions. Some of them might even be feasible to run with.

I'm not trying to shoot anything down. It's nothing so malicious as that. I simply see practical issues with this and I would rather our players send us plot ideas that do not have any such complications.
djspectre, if you want to have a particular story told, you should feel free to talk to one of the DMs about the possibility of running it, and if we like it and think it is feasible, I don't see why it shouldn't put into motion.
But this idea is quite problematic.
I commend you for your efforts, but I'm just not convinced you've quite hit the nail on the head this time.

I guess I can accept that the DM's are seeing limitations to this that I am not. Obviously, I was just trying to create some new ideas flowing.
Was worth a shot........
