After having done several public performances with my bard, I was asked to do a perform check. Should I have to do this ? shouldn't the other chars decide by themselves if they liked it or not?
If I do have to roll perform checks, what results indicate what quality of performance?

I think the actual quality of the performance you're doing (whether you've written it yourself or whatever) should reflect your skill points in perform to begin with, then people decide whether or not they like it from there without needing you to roll a check.
Maybe a check roll just to reassure people you have considerable skill by demonstrating your hefty modifier.

i dont believe in "roll playing" i believe in role playing. i believe the policy is if a DM asks you to roll a check, then it counts. if a pc does it, you dont have to respond.

If you want to roll a perform check at the end of a performance, feel free. It helps express things that the engine can't like quality of voice, pitch, etc.
Obviously, just avoid getting everyone together for a story and then go:
"<tells story>"
<*roll perform check>
Of course, our voice commands are down at the moment anyway.
