The Scenic Route

On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.

Wow. That's all I can say.

Amazing video. Talk about suicide though, I was nervous watching that.

Heh, were there really so few cars in Paris back then? Must have been some holiday or really early, probably both. The Montmartre finale was like O.O, those are really narrow, paved streets and today the parking cars usually make them difficult to pass through even for bikers.

There's a modern day version of this. It's called Getaway from Stockholm, they've made 6 videos so far. This is a link to the first one, a Porche 911 (http://www.streetracersonline.com/videos/d2.php) I have the second video on my hard disk somewhere, that one has Toyota Supra and a Ford Escort Cossworth racing together through the streets, outrunning and outwitting Swedish Police. Crazy stuff.

These ones blalantly tease cops and outrun them. Kinda like playing Need For Speed in real life.

Kinda stupid really, but entertaining nonetheless.

Trailers for Stockholm 3 (http://www.streetracersonline.com/videos/stkhlm3.php) and 4 (http://www.streetracersonline.com/videos/stkhlm4.php)

-That- is -brilliant-, especially with the microphone on the firewall of the car. Only other movie that had me on the edge of my seat like that is the mustang v. charger chase scene from Bullitt (starring Steve McQueen, also ex professional racecar driver) through the streets of San Fransisco.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Anyone who as driven in Paris, or even been to Paris, knows that the Arch de Triomphe is home to possibly the worst traffic jams in Europe.

There was nobody there when this guy sped through it.

It must've been very early morning, judging from the sky and light traffic, as well as absence of police.

Still though, very nice.

I thought it was kind of boring.

Then again, I don't like NASCAR either.

Yeah.

I think the Streetracer videos were a bit uneventful, but the rendezvouz video was really nice the way they made out it was a guy rushing to see his woman.

P.S. Yes, NASCAR is balls.

It was really early in the day, you can tell from how the sky appears. Plus, it would make sense.

Yes, but the daylight appears latish here - it's basically directly under London and it is still GMT+1.

The Getaway in Stockholm videos are great. I have seen 1, 2 and 3. I need to get number 4 soon :D
