A tall, blond-headed man in red plate, which is darker in most spots due to a covering of dried blood walks by the Rock Bottom, Pissing Crone, Town Hall and Canal Ward noticeboards and pins the following letter up
Citizens of Sanctuary:
This city of Sanctuary exists because of one reason alone: war.
War is as omnipresent as existence itself. It is a necesary and useful condition, in so many ways. For us, citizens of this 'Sanctuary', it holds all the more importance.
When I speak of war, I speak of battle. I speak of fighting. I speak of conflict of every kind. I speak of killing, before one is killed. I speak of survival.
This pitiful little town is surrounded by powerful enemies. Enemies who no doubt are planning attacks as you read from this very noticeboard. Drow. Illithid. Beholders. Orogs. Duegar.
Each of you has fallen prey to one of these enemies. Yet when I walk these streets, I see people casually strolling along, gossiping and seemingly carefree. I walk into the inn, and I see people sharing quaint conversation and pleasantries over rothemilk or an ale. I see people who know where they are and why they are here, yet fail to respond. I see cowards and pacifists who talk of their beloved surface, but do nothing to get closer to walking under its sky once more.
This needs to change. People need to embrace war, train for it, and engage in it. War calls for each and every one of you, whether you wish it or not.
There are two options.
The first is to be ready and prepared for it, and fight with strength and power, such that at the end of the battle you are standing victorious, covered in the blood of your enemies, who sought to do the same to you.
Or you could idle time away as you do now, engaging in pointless talk and activities, all of which will guarantee your death at the hands of some beast.
If you are one of the people who view the latter option with any regard, you are truly one who lacks valour and resolve, and makes up for it in ignorance and weakness alone. If that is you, cease reading this message immediately.
If, however, you have the strength of mind and body to accept the wisdom of the first option, then I have an offer for you.
This is an offer I extend to all men and women of strength, of any race. I offer the opportunity to train with, and learn from, the followers of the Lord of War himself, the Mighty Garagos. I offer comradeship, protection and training to any warrior who would embrace the Reaver and swear fealty and service to his raw power.
Together we shall train. Together we shall be taught how to fight like Garagos himself: with raw strength and rage alone. And, ultimately, together we shall fight as one unstoppable group and cleave our way through our enemies to the surface.
We shall become the Reaver's personal War Party in this dark underworld. We will be elite, and uncheckable.
Seek me out.
If you want the surface, fight for it.
