Friends, there is a difference between society and government. The two are confused, but were not always so in our minds. Society is brought about by the needs and wants of mankind, it is how we band together in brotherhood to peacefully protect our lives and property, to feed our families. Yet government is brought by wickedness, designed to limit our freedom that it does not greedily impede that of our neighbors.
150 years ago, our first thoughts were to our society and it was free. The first Watch existed not to enforce the rule of government, but to ensure the sanctity of our freedoms. Government developed slowly, law accumulated rigidly, and ultimately the Watch moved from protecting us from slavers and monsters to protecting wealth and privilage. The formulation of the Spellguard at first designed to protect us magically, quickly came to strip away a weapon the people had to resist encroaching governments: magic was denied us. How long until they ban our swords, and even now who is still well armed to resist?
As our numbers grew, the power government claimed to need grew. Yet did this need truly exist? Did we fall prey to distant memories of unfair, oppressive governments on the surface? The desire to be rich, the desire to rule over others--even at the cost of taking gold from our neighbors, even at the cost of jailing those who did not agree to the law of government? Must the minority be enslaved to the majority?
The answer is no. Once, those who did not hold with the supremecy of government over society dwelt peacefully in Lower Sanctuary Until the Watch came, until the conquering Council came, we were free. This freedom was taken. Now a Councilor pretends to promise its return? One man can not do it. The people must demand this freedom. Resist our enemies, arm yourselfs. If this Councilor truly wishes our freedom, force his hand! Demand we are armed to resist those who threaten society to placate goverment including this Councilor who claims to be our friend!
The Council, if it wishes to stay the hand of the angry people must show its commitment to change and its desire to exist peaceably with society. Albert Ubel and all his former supporters demand justice, demand a pardon by goverment for defending society.
