What is a Gray Orc you ask?!

I asked the same thing when I fist saw it available. Here's what I used to help me in my research before applying to play one!

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20030301a

Hopefully this will help anyone hoping to play one also

So I can assume from reading that excerpt that no one will like this thing? Hated/feared even more so than drow, etc. Just wanted to be clear via a DM. Thanks

They'd be as hated as Orogs, Ogres, goblins, kobolds etcetera all of which we have walking around sanctuary right now.

Oh, I guess I was asking about:

"Outlook

Gray orcs are just as mean, savage, and barbaric as their northern cousins, but they lack the mountain orcs' drive to conquer and enslave. A gray orc is quite likely to react suddenly and irrationally to events, trusting to his heart and instincts more readily than logic. When presented with an opportunity to attack a hated rival, a gray orc doesn't hesitate to attack even if he has been brutally defeated dozens of times before by the same enemy."

and

"Relations with Other Races

The gray orcs don't get along well with anyone apart from their immediate tribe. Other orc tribes are viewed with suspicion and jealousy. Since it's assumed that another tribe has it better off than the one you belong to, orc tribes often attack each other to steal resources. They have no particular hatred for other races; gray orcs pretty much hate everyone equally. Notable exceptions are goblins and kobolds (whom the orcs often accept into their tribes as minions or slaves) and ogres (whom the orcs admire for their savage strength)."

specifically then. Thanks.

Gray Orcs, as a quick reference (I just looked it up myself), are not to be mistaken with Orogs. Orogs do originate from the Gray Orcs, but Orogs are a tribe of Gray Orcs who got trapped within the Underdark, after the combined armies of the Silver Marches forced them to go down there. Over time, they developped into their own little race, and they scattered by wide and far.

Just a for your information.

[Read the sourcebook: 'The Silver Marches' on this]

That's true, but it should be noted that Grey Orcs and Orogs have very different outlooks, personalities and attributes.

They are completely different races.

Pimp! In the underdark, it's like a normal half-orc except better in every way with no ECL!

I realize that I'm not on the server all the time, but do we really have these just "walking around" in Sanctuary? Being approved for an app yes, but I've yet to see any of these IC anywhere on the server. I realize that doesn't mean much since I can only play for a couple hours at a time and may totally miss someone on a different timezone. Just wondering since I'm assuming that pretty much anyone from Sanctuary should probably want to kill most of those things and ask questions later IC, but I think people OOC generally think... oh, different race, must be DM approved... I probably shouldn't mess with it. So I was just hoping for some IC reaction clarification.

You'd attack them on sight as much as you'd attack a duergar on sight I'd imagine and yes I've seen a few kobolds an orog, an ogre(not pc), a minatuar(not pc) at one stage and several goblins(lots of pc and npc).

If you attack grupplo the npc everytime you see him then I supose you could attack players of this race.

(I'm not a dm but this is the way I'd look at it)

In no way would you attack a Duergar on sight. They own a "peaceful" mine next to Sanctuary, have lots of Duergar within the walls, and are a native race of the Underdark.

Grey Orcs are not a native race. They're unpredictable and savage creatures. I'm quite sure Sanctuary's citizens have slain many more Orcs (and their subraces) than Duergar and would associate any kind of full blooded (or even half blooded) Orc creature with a monster that they should slay or at very least be wary of.

The thing with Ogres and Minotaurs is that no single man would walk up to it in a bar and tell it to get the fuck out of the City (Laws allow them to stay in Sanctuary but the odd vigilante might take it upon themselves to shun such creatures). In this way, they won't have too much trouble. Goblins and Kobolds will probably be bullied around, but tolerated because they're relatively harmless.

Grey Orcs, Orogs, Drow, etc are somewhere in between. They're not singularly large enough to simply intimidate people into tolerating their presence and they're not pathetic enough for people to consider them no threat whatsoever. The in-between races are probably going to be the toughest to play.

-And- favored class cleric (!) to go with that 20 WIS...er, +2 WIS that is

Make it know that I am applying for the forum title of lesser hate elemental with this next sarcastic yet humorous statement:

That race could be as broken as a svirfnebli monk...[cue the laugh track]

Fortunately it's Naga playing it, so the whole server will hunt it down and kill it within scant hours of its arrival ;)

That idea is gold and you know it, Brother!

Well, most of the PC's that are the "special" races are in hiding, I have met pretty much all of them or at least seen them. They dont hang out with my character because of his interest in their *spolier* form. Its all good though. just know that they are out there and if you have a problem with the fact you dont see any apply for something special

Everybody knows you don't get many spells from that high wisdom! Your better to exploit the +2 str! j/k --Edit--

...and its got +1 ECL DAMN YOU!

My immediate comment to this thread is that it is extremely important that players all realize that playing a kobold, goblin, drow, orog, grey orc, or whatever else absolutely, 100% invites very serious IC consequences from other characters and NPCs. Killing grey orcs for being grey orcs (or drow for being drow, etc.) is fully encouraged.

Uh oh...DM sanctified killing of grey orcs.

Was nice knowing you Vintarf.

what about killing tieflings for having horns and tails and looking like demons?>

Last time I checked you could cash in a Tiefling's tail for 3k.

sweet!

If you would kill it (IC), you can kill it. There's no "Not allowed to kill this Race". Just in case people start asking.
