Letter to the watch commander

Greetings Seargant,

Recently I was with a friend in the inn in upper sanctuary when without any warning a watch recurit busted in and proceeded to throw my friend out. Now my friend happened to be a kobold but we had just escaped from the drow together and assuming he was a danger to the city simply based on his race does an amazing disservice. Surly this is not what you teach your recruits.

Samus

Sergeant Fezlkirn forwards the letter to Lieutenant Alders, who pens a reply.

    Samus,

While I understand your concern, it seems to me that this is basically a misunderstanding. Had the Private in question actually been assuming that your kobold companion was a danger to Sanctuary, he would have arrested the kobold and had him tried for the capital crime of endangerment -- which clearly did not happen. On the other hand, if the kobold had been making a nuissance of himself, it is entirely reasonable (and extremely lenient, in fact, since nuissance is a minor crime) for him to have been simply removed from the building. I suspect that the incident was motivated by a complaint from the owner of the establishment or one of the patrons, and in that case you actually have the Private to thank that your friend doesn't now have a criminal record.

As you know, kobold attacks are a leading cause of death amongst citizens who leave Sanctuary's gates. While we certainly recognize that kobolds who abide by Sanctuary's laws and don't cause undue disturbances are entitled to the same rights as other citizens (although there is considerable controversy amongst politicians about the point), you must also understand that we work hard every day to make sure that the evil, bloodthirsty, baby-stealing kobolds that nest outside Sanctuary, or even criminal troublemakers like the exiled kobolds led by Lord Bunge, do not threaten the good citizens of Sanctuary. As such, it is imperative that we not treat complaints about criminal kobold behavior lightly, and that we respond vigilantly to each and every incident before some innocent child is carried off to be eaten.

If you have further concerns, please contact me or Sergeant Sheps.

    Sincerely, Lieutenant Alders Sanctuary Watch

A new, larger lock appears on Sheriff Walter's personal locker shortly thereafter.

To Lieutenant Alders,

All he was doing was simply talking to others in the inn!! How exactly does this qualify as a nuissance? If kobolds are not allowed in the inn as seems to be the case then it should be made plain that is the case. Otherwise more investigating should have been done rather than just walking in and immediatly begining to count (something I hadn't seen since I was a child!). If this is how the watch opperates than perhaps the people of lower are right to want as little meddeling from them as possible. I have taken my business to the pissing crone any further letters for me can be left there.
