Merc Companies

I got a new PC looking for a faction to join, and generally a merc company would fit his vibe. He's an ex gladiator so meatshielding/fighting is his thing.

I was wondering what factions player/DM are around for him to have a look at. perhaps a rep from a faction could post generally what he would hear about them as rumours, and who to contact IC?

thanking in advance

It's a he? Hmmm not much good for the Sanctuary Sisters then :)

Depending on his interests the Watch and the Tigers are always looking for good fighters.

If you don't like being a patrol man and can handle the general dislike there is the Spellguard Associates always looking for resourceful people.

There is the Society of the Ordered Mind dedicated to eradicating aberrant creatures in the Underdark.

Any of these may be a way for you to go.

Cheers Nestek

Let me correct something. Looking for nice and good -players- , not fighters.

Well there's the Magenta Merchantile

I'm sort of trying to get people together, haven't decided on a name

That's basically it for Australian times though :P

pfffffffft if you wanna be a crotch hound for a bunch of mages become a spellguard associate....the Watch would be awesome and the tiger eyes i presume would be great fun....the magentas are a great option if you wanna play your char with as much freedom as possible as the general assumption is im here to make as much coin as possible while im stuck here as i can.

Let's not forget the Seekers, folks.

No, it's not just for ranger and rogue PCs. It's never had just ranger and rogue PCs.

Granted, the Seekers isn't for every meatshield, just ones who want to bask in the adoration of a party with l33t heal skills.

The largest and most notable mercenary company in Sanctuary is the Tigereye Mercenary Company, which arrived in Sanctuary roughly six years ago when it was contracted to help the Watch keep order in Lower Sanctuary. Since that time, it has established itself as a formidable presence in Lower Sanctuary, despite numerous run-ins with the Council. Although the Company is largely comprised of duergar warriors, and is led by a powerful duergar known only as The Captain, it employs many members of other races. The Company actively recruits the best and strongest adventurers in Sanctuary into its ranks. Its members can often be found in Lower Sanctuary, wearing their distinctive yellow and orange uniforms, or contacted at their imposing fortress in Lower Sanctuary.

The Magenta Mercantile is a fledgling mercenary company noted for its members' distinctive choice of attire.

It seems to me that the Tigereye Mercenary Company, or a player faction such as the Magenta Mercantile, would fit your character well, if he is interested in serving as a mercenary. On the other hand, it may turn out that it's not a mercenary company that you're looking for. Some other groups within the city, as mentioned in earlier posts, include the Watch, the Seekers, the Society of the Ordered Mind, and the Spellguard with their Associates. There are also other groups, both NPC-run and player-run, which are less public about their existence -- learning about such groups must be done in-game.

The Watch is a law enforcement and civil defense force, not a mercenary company. They are responsible for enforcing the laws of the town in Upper Sanctuary, arresting criminals, collecting taxes and tariffs, compiling case files and preparing reports, defending the gate, protecting the Town Hall, and generally carrying out the will of the Council and keeping the town secure. The Watch has a long history in Sanctuary, having existed for nearly a hundred and fifty years under varied leadership. A significant fraction of the town's population has served in either the Watch or the Watch's reserves at some point in their lives; this is particularly true of people living in Upper Sanctuary, but also includes a good number of people living in Lower Sanctuary. Watchmen can be found regularly patrolling Upper Sanctuary, or contacted at the Watch House.

The Seekers are not a mercenary company, and by and large disdain people motivated solely by material profit. They are officially the city's scout force, responsible for coordinating the "forward defense," but they have also taken it upon themselves to serve as the champions of the search for a safe path to the surface. Furthermore, the Seekers routinely lead dangerous "liberty raids" on nearby slaver caravans and small settlements, which, although controversial, enjoy considerable support amongst Sanctuary's ex-slave population. A significant fraction of Sanctuary's population, particularly of people in Lower Sanctuary, were themselves liberated and brought to Sanctuary by the Seekers. The Seekers can be found at their Hall, in Upper Sanctuary.

The Spellguard is an elite order of mages who serve the Council primarily by controlling a small army of re-activated svirfneblin animatrons that are used to defend the town. They are also responsible for advising the Council on arcane matters, studying magical artifacts that could potentially pose a danger to Sanctuary, and performing other duties appropriate to their special expertise. While only mages are permitted to join the Spellguard proper, ranking Spellguard members have recently begun a program known as the "Spellguard Associates" to recruit trustworthy assistants to help in specific tasks. While similar, the Associates are not a mercenary company in the traditional sense, as their objectives are not profit-oriented. The Spellguard can be contacted at the Tower Spellguard that looms over Upper Sanctuary.

The Society of the Ordered Mind is a controversial group dedicated to the complete elimination of aberrations from the Underdark. They are not a mercenary company, but rather a brotherhood of crusaders devoted to their grim war against natural order's nefarious foe. Over the seven years they have been in the city, they have made few friends due to their distant demeanor, their patient rejection of the joys of the surface world, and their advocacy of dangerous raids against nests of aberrations that all too often inadvertantly draw monstrosities back to Sanctuary's gates. Despite this, they remain popular with a small segment of the population who particularly despise aberrations and view the Society's cause as both righteous and necessary. The Society of the Ordered Mind can be contacted at their Chapterhouse in Upper Sanctuary.

Thanks everyone for the info :D
