Paladin vs. Cleric: Comparison

So the two most well known religious classes are the Cleric and the Paladin/Blackguard

Though when on this server, at low levels, these two often can be confused for one another because at low levels they both possess the ability to turn/destroy/control undead and have healing abilities.

However as these two progress, the distinction becomes clear - Clerics are the voice of their diety and Paladins are the warriors of their deity.

Clerics gain all the divine abilities of their patron deity as they progress, while a Paladins abilities divine abilities remain somewhat limited (Remove disease, Laying of Hands, Smite evil/good).

So I would think that ideally, Clerics should travel with a paladin of the same diety. Granted the cleric is no wimp when it comes to combat early in the game, but later on, it becomes the Paladin acting as a body guard essentially for the cleric.

Now on this server we have lots of clerics and lots of paladins, but how many have actually paired up with a cleric/paladin of the same diety before? My Tyraan has yet to find a cleric of Tyr.

And also I'd like to know if anyone here prefers a paladin over a cleric or vice versa and why? Personally I find clerics harder to play, but that's just me.

Granted the cleric is no wimp when it comes to combat early in the game, but later on, it becomes the Paladin acting as a body guard essentially for the cleric.

Nah.

I totally follow what you're saying and whatnot, but truth is it all comes down to RP. I think it'd be a cool scenario if perhaps a more book-wise priest styled cleric, travelled with the assistance of a Paladin, for protection means. Not all Clerics however would fit this, but it could be a fun concept for an rp pair.

Also I tend to think of clerics as the voice of their diety, and Paladins as the dieties warriors aswell, but where their skills lead are more to upholding the law -no matter- and assisting others, while clerics have a wider range of possibilities (due to the fact they can worship evil dieties.)

either way, it's a thought, and a concept of sorts, that -could- work, and be interesting.

Perhaps instead of the full battle cleric, with FP, tower shield, and mace, the Paladin figure could follow one more based around medieval monkdom- with more of a commoner's appearance, a robe, and simple weapon..his strengths more on spreading the word, than smiting foes.

( btw, it's good to run into you again! I had partied with you the other day, and had a good bit of fun. until your network card started to get twitchy)
