A Sanctuary Scribing System?

Alright, I think it would be a great Idea and Good For RP if we had a system for scribing. Basically what it would be is a way to scribe things yourself using the materials required. If you have A Quill (A feather would be the Item) an Inkwell, and a piece of parchment you should be able to write. The Inkwell would have a set amount of ink (2 uses or like 30 characters) and you use it on the parchment to bring up a dialog box which prompts you to speak what you want written then you click done (Similar to the sending system) After so much use of the quill it would break or something and the Inkwell would disappear after use. The Scribed note would be changed into a Unique power self only which would bring up a dialogue box displaying what was written. It would add greatly to RP I think :D

not sure how hard it would be but might be nice if being able to incorporate transfering the notes to other people was possible. Then you could actually leave a note for someone somewhere in game and if someone else found it well.. Could lead to very interesting role play opportunites.

As far as I know, this is impossible, becuase there is no SetDescription(). It would require some sort of dynamic system to write this 'message' to a db outside of the game, and then on a server reload, have an item blueprint be created containing your message. That would be module bloating rather quickly, and in the end, could have likely been accomplished using the letters and notes forum, with no limit on character count. :P

Argh, that's me above this trying to sound smart and informed.

Scripting is possible, but is inelegant at best. Arkov and I both have worked on this, he's not found a script he likes, and I can't fathom why the one I'm working on isn't working.

The key to what I am saying is putting it in a dialouge box, NOT in a set discription, and I didnt know that Orob :) . I REALLY hope you figure this out it would add greatly in my opinion.

Ah, I suppose that would be possible with a clever use of custom tokens and local variables. Hmm.

I have recently made a somewhat similar system (for foreign books that need to be translated, rather than books that are scribed by players) that has pretty much laid the groundwork for a simple scribe system. Honestly, as Orob mentioned, I haven't seen one that does note scribing in anything close to an elegant fashion -- but at the same time I understand that it's better to have a simple system in the game, than to refuse anything but perfection and in doing so ultimately have no system at all.

I should be getting to this shortly. I don't know whether it'll have all the aspects that I originally wanted (custom seals, varying qualities of parchment, etc) but it should be sufficient for, you know, writing things. :D

[Decides to not quote his post] Awsome! Rock on Arkov!

I think not all characters should know how to write...It seems that everyone throughout Faerun has had primary school education. Maybe in magical lands writing skills comes with the genes

IMHO, only a select few should be allowed to write : wizards ( not sorcerers), clerics, monks, bards, menestrels, and possibly rogues...otherwise the others wouldn't realistically have had the training, education, time whatever to write...

Of course there can be exceptions, like a warrior son to a king or something like that, but your everyday Joe the Warrior or Fred The Barbarian will never had access to sufficient education to write (writing is one of the most complicated things a person can learn in his life)

In the Realms, everyone does get basic reading and writing lessons. You're generally taught by your local priest or wizard.

And barbarians aren't literate at creation. In PnP they have to spend skill points to gain literacy.

This isn't pnp however. Still my barbarian has very bad grammar and if he decides to change his mind mid sentence he will write the entire thing. He's bad at communicating through writing...and verbal communication...well without pissing people off that is XD
