To Mayor Bresley, Temple [DM]

[This letter is left at the temple during one the runs we've made to pick up additional citizens]

Mayor,

The camp on the far side of Dunwarren is starting to get crowded with citizens from Sanctuary. Some Watchmen have killed some of the local rothe for meat and we gathered mushrooms last evening, but conditions are growing cramped and I'm wondering at how long the food supply can sustain the increasing population. We've been bringing more citizens from the temple with each run, as you've requested, but now we have a lot of citizens mulling about with little to do other than walk through that tempting portal to the Way and get themselves killed. We've already recovered the corpses of a number of citizens and had to keep an eye on the portal for any who drag guardians back through to our side in their attempts to escape.

To date, no group entering that portal has made it to the far side and returned. Most have either fled or died not far from the entrance. We've made our own more organized foray into there to recover corpses and scout the conditions. The only corpses we haven't yet found were for the first Seeker group to enter. We've yet to hear any word from them and can only guess at their fate. It is possible that the Way is a one-way path, which sets up some logistical demands on us if we want to get the civilians through. Until we hear from them or find their corpses on our next foray, we've no way to know.

And speaking of getting the civilians through, that is a current concern here. From what I've discussed with others, it seems we think that a strategy similar to the one we're currently using to get citizens to the camp will be possible to deal with the guardians. With a large, organized, and well-armed vanguard, we can escort the civilian population just as we have through Dunwarren.

The problem we've yet to figure out is how to get people past these tall stone obelisks that shoot beams at any who pass. While it's possible to run many indivduals past them simultaneously such that they would only shoot a few people, even a single shot is likely to kill any civilians and, for the young and old, their slower rate of movement will leave them far more vulnerable.

As such, discussion has turned toward the use of siege weaponry, magic, or other means of rendering these obelisks inopperable, ideally by destroying them outright. If you have means that might give us aid in that pursuit, we could use them.

For the time being, given that none have yet returned from the far side and the difficulties named above, we've been wholly focused on getting more citizens to the camp here. Opinion seems to be hardening that it would be irresponsible for us to push ahead until we utilize our remaining strength to be sure that the population at the temple makes it here. If you require any assistance or have any instructions for us regarding ways to expedite the end of this exodus from Dunwarren, I think we all stand ready to asist.

For the time being, I think we'll continue at what you've already given us to do. Things are more than a little chaotic on this side - I would in fact call them downright anarchistic - but it has been easy to organize groups to help escort more to the camp.

Best regards,

Beregon Hrafn
