Running into a bit of a problem. I need to get beyond a locked door. I don't have the key and don't have any idea of where to get it.
So, while I am pretty sure this is ICly possible, I'm not sure if it is OOCly possible. Here it is.
1. Use knock (the spell).
2. Use an acid flask to melt off the hinges / lock.
3. Use explosives to blow it off.
4. Bash it down.
Those are pretty much my only options without a key. I could also use slime to dissolve the door in place of the acid flasks, but really it'd be the same process and redundant.
So, without a key are any of the above possible, or will we be forced to hunt every area of the module until we find the correct key?

Although, the specific instance upon which this question was based has been solved (and as a point: there was no way to obtain the key ICly because it didn't exist); the question still stands unanswered. Are the DM's discussing the question, or something?
I'd really like to know the answer to this because I'd love a chance to explore the module more, and I can't think of an IC reason the methods I listed above wouldn't work.

Depends on the door. Depends on the circumstances.
Sometimes we will allow creativity in solving a door problem, sometimes ...not so lucky.
There is no one over-arching rule in regards to this.

Okay, thanks for the response Mort, but let me ask a follow up question to this in an attempt to get better clarification.
Can I get an example of the type of circumstances that would allow for something like this to work?
For example, if I wanted to break into generic area #853 would it work? Would it not work in cases in which I attempt to break into a spoiler area that -requires- a key to get inside? Or is this something that just comes down to individual DM preference?
Also, as I pointed out above the area I wanted to get into didn't have a key in the module. I was given directions to use that door by a DM NPC. It led to a rather major area of the module. In such cases where no key exists, and which it is impossible to use alternate methods of gaining access... how is this handled? Are we just out of luck?

No. I really dont want to define this as I dont want people to make absurd deductions based on which door we would allow this for and which door we wouldnt. It's a case-by-case basis.
As well as a desire to keep a fragment of secrecy and unknown about the module.
