I had that same feat with Drin when I first played him. I also semi-perma'd him after he died the very first time.
Surviving quests after level 7 becomes increasingly hard as the quests that you are limited to doing tend to have a sharp increase in damage causing abilities.

Sigurd was a lvl 8 fighter/wizard frontliner - lvl 2 fighter, 6 wizard - who was never fugued; except of course on the even where he perma'd.
