Cut the death magic please

Nothing is fun for anyone about failing a save and instantly being in the fugue plane. Its doubly annoying when they make sure to take your ward off with a dispel from haste and inviz then hit you with the death magic in the next second.

No chance to react or do anything, its just instant death thnx for a month's worth of xp and 1000s in consumbles from a mysteriously vanishing pack. I don't see why so many things in a low-level, low magic server have the instant kill.

If the DMs warned people there would be dispel/death magic in an event I'd bet almost no one would come. Frankly it just makes me wish I hadn't gone to the event at all.

"Your fault for not spending four feats on saves." Well, low rolls can and do happen, even someone with the saves can roll badly and get stuck with this pointless frustration of an instant transition to the Fugue plane.

For the vast majority of characters they have scant odds of saving and its really just an instant xp deduction, as well as all their stuff if they get unlucky.

instant death effects should be removed from the module. They aren't fun in anyway for anyone at all, they contribute nothing interesting or worthwhile. They're absolutely frustrating and pointless.

I think everyone's had quite a few deaths from death spells, you just gotta roll with the punches. Its a part of the game...you in fact signed up for it, when you decided to play NWN (which has quite a few death spells).

It definitely sucks tho to die from it! I hear u there. Just got to take it on the chin and truck on IMO.

I never got powerful enough to do anything that had death spells in it, I didn't even know the server had it anyway... It does sound pretty lame, but I'm sure the the DMs have better stuff to do than disable all the death spells.

Hey, that does suck, sorry to hear about that. I've seen it happen a few times. It is a bit shocking how quickly it happens and I hear ya as far as it feeling unfair because basically, as pc's we don't get those spells unless we're really really lucky...

I'll be honest, now the worst part of dieing for me during those big chaotic events isn't dieing... It's other players cold looting my pack while i'm down...

*sigh*

It's crappy that is the case but it is.

Well, I can see why you're pissed off.

But I disagree. Here's why;

Death magic makes things scary. Usually you only find it on the toughest things. Beholders, illithid, and powerful chosen mages. These things have them becase they are tough as hell, and supposed to be scary.

If i'm not mistaken, you play Kairn, who is a pretty tough fighter. As a tough fighter, the DMs are obviously going to throw stuff at you that is going to challenge you. They don't want it to be easy, they want it to be challenging, and that's what makes it fun.

Expecting to live during a high end DM quest, is pretty much folly. Usually there is a pretty decent amount of casualties. But what you lose in levels, you generally make up in loot/follow up RP.

Especially since after you die, and you corpse is recovered/(attempted to be saved) it leads to all kinds of crazy shit, after death trauma, etc. Death can add a lot to teh fear and survival aspect of the server, and make for interesting stories. It's not about hte supplies and XP, it;s about the RP.

PHK is a killer but hey I bet you wouldnt be complaining if you where a caster WITH PHK!

Absolutely not.

The way you've laid it out it sounds as if you're a newcomer to NWN. In that case, it'll take some time before understanding the game but it'll come eventually. Meanwhile, I suggest looking through our forum to locate some of the survival threads we've had, many offer great advice.

The thing about death magic is that is only sounds bad because of the scary name. A greataxe crit is equally as lethal, it just has a nicer name. For a spellcaster, death magic is one of the few things to level the playing field. A tank can KD kill a mage in one round. It is absolutely no different to death magic. If you didn't have the opportunity to prepare, or, you were dispelled after you did, the character will die. Life in the underdark is rough as guts. Having died to simultaneous dispel/kd, I feel you pain. But I have also died to melee crits and just plain KDs where I could not a single thing except wonder why the hell the fugue loading screen always seem to take three times as long as any other....

Being quick to gulp potions helps, if you get dispel and pop Protection from Alignment fast enough your fine for the follow up phk.

Also you only need 1 feat and 14 con to get +10 fort vs spells at level 3 combined with a few items that give you boosts to saves vs death and are common enough, it's possible to be completely immune to certain death magic and almost immune to others without buffs.

Though the above would only be if you wanted to be safe from such all the time, it's not difficult to keep yourself warded and sure you'll die sometimes, but meh as has been said before, just gotta roll with it.

It sucks, and can be pretty awful, but yes, I've also eaten two greataxe crits in one round to die as well. The uncertainty factor of a lot of things in D&D is really the only thing that keeps it interesting for me after working with it for so long, death/fear magic being the same sort of deal.

Hopefully you are not still upset, and well, just remember that without the lows, the highs would never be quite so exciting.

No. Locked.
