Things I Like about EfU

As any project progresses it tends to mature, and with that maturity it tends to change. Perhaps not at the core of things, but certainly the player perception of what it entailed in the beginning – the raw, new, and fresh idea – has been altered by becoming more comfortable with the setting. There have been multiple posts about a desire to “get back to the original feel” and many suggestions to modify the current setting as it stands to revert it perhaps to what a certain player, or player group, enjoyed. I hope this post will remind players of the things that EfU has at it’s core that are still new, fresh, and exciting—and that there are still a wealth of ideas out there to latch on to and stories to tell that would be very, very entertaining.

I like the setting: Very well crafted, and continually in flux. The ability to have a setting that can be changed very significantly by player IG actions is a prime example of how interactive games should be set up. I as a player appreciate a setting where I can play and interact, but I get more interested in the setting and my character’s interaction with it if my character can matter and alter the game world. The chosen setting allows for free interaction of a lot of different character concepts, and that freedom is refreshing. The mere fact that it is not like the beginning is refreshing, it proves that the setting is not static.

I like the interaction: Not only the players who want to tell a wonderful story, but the DMs who want to do the same. It makes it fun to be able to play a game that others enjoy similarly, and who have a desire to make the game fun for others as well as themselves. DM interactions serve to help a player feel motivated, interested, and invested in continuing the story of their character, and all the fun people put into their characters and interactions keep old players playing, and new players staying.

I like fun of it: It represents an open setting where any idea can fly so long as you put in the time, make it fun and exciting, and involve players. I enjoy spending time here because I have fun doing it. The stories, the conflicts, the battles, and the great RP along the way make me look forward to the times when I can log in.

I like the power the DMs let us have: We as players I think can sell ourselves short sometimes, and think we NEED DM attention to make things happen. Some times that is true, but the majority of the time it is us the DMs have invested from the get go with the opportunity to run with practically any idea we have. If we show the initiative and get things moving, growing, exciting, and functioning, they have always chimed in with help and support, with ideas, and with scenarios that challenge. I have seen things stagnate in groups both as a player and as a DM, and 99% of the time it is due to lack of PC support rather than lack of DM interaction. You show a DM a good, fun plot line through IG actions you came up with, that you have gotten off the ground, and have had fun with yourself, and with others, and I guarantee it will fly. (Perhaps not the way you exactly envisioned it, but it will be fun!)

If you have things about EfU that you like, post them here. This is not a gripe board, a board for suggestions, or for things “I would like to see X”. Please post things you yourself enjoy about playing here on EfU. Really, this is a tribute to all the DMs present and past who have helped us as players to have an amazingly fun way to rot our brains out.

I like the unique original atmosphere, being stuck down below. I like the ambiant loot which is part of this. The stuff you don't pick up but which reminds you where you are. Every detail is though of, which is really appreciated. As well, the 'no phat loot' rule of thumb is cool. The "you'll never get a +2 weapon" is the way i enjoy heroic fantasy rp games. Makes more room for PC skills.

I like the low level server side, which allows anyone new to pop in and feel like everyone else, and which maintains balance and realism. In this i enjoy the difficulty of the server. Getting to lvl 10 was a long term goal (stupid?) which was actually very entertaining. With this I like the death system which is hard on pcs, yet cool enough to allow them to resume the game. I like the "fast to lvl 5-6 then slowllllyyy after that" decision. I like the way PvP is handled too.

I like the player base, which rolls with the game, with which i've never had any issues OOCly, and who rp for the sake of it, as well as enjoy the good old lvling up.

I like the DM team. They've been more than cool with me, and are excellent at running entertainement for others, spending huge amount of time and energy on this project.

As a whole, I like the creativity shown on this server. I'm trying to think of things i really really don't like, not just suggestions, and can't find any.

BRAVO.

And i like GOLD!

I like the freedom to explore the setting, by travelling (at your own risk):

- inside Sanctuary and finding hints of a number of past and present plotlines (ie: the bookshops - high and low; the various flyers lying on the ground, maps; occasional graffiti; NPC comments about PC and NPC current/past actions or the way they feel/think, merchants with sometimes strange and unique items that may or may not be plot related).

- outside Sanctuary and finding hints of past and present plotlines (ie: the Mines, along the Dark Lake, the Sands (in particular, have been a favourite and incredibly atmospheric & dangerous haunt for me), the ways to locate Traensyr; objects, possible shrines, doors, scratchings marks, crypts; all manner of possible keys to unlock the imagination of what may or may not be going on in EfU).

- I like being jumped by DM interaction on scripted quests (which always keeps me on toes RPing to the hilt, as much as possible (sometimes I get lazy though, I'm not perfect; and just by listening and watching others I learn heaps); being jumped by a DM in a building or on the street or path or wherever for 5 seconds of DM interaction (Who exactly is running Sanctuary  ; and in the Underdark itself? (How deep does the rabbit hole go?). As Beggar pointed out, DM interaction is not often necessary for players to further plotlines. Get involved, get immersed in your character, and the best can happen to you and the setting becomes vibrant.

- I like the amazing stories told by players that unfold in their journals; in the occasional letter.

- all of the above creates an ambient feel that immediately drew me in when I logged on to EfU for the first time to 'test it out'. The entry point for new players into EfU is amazing - I stopped running and started walking to the gates. As Beggar pointed out: the scope for personal and public storytelling is enormous.

- I like the fact that everything I have just mentioned is the tip of the iceberg of what is out there, and what is to come. 2 years or so of play here and I still feel like there are ongoing plotlines out there that I have no idea about. And may never know. Depends how much I am willing to dig, or risk. Bit like life really. If you want it, come get it, I dare you. :D

- thankyou DMs, players, and EfU.

I like the exploring part of the server, exploring the machine, the underdark, its so worth it to have a scout type character just to see some of the things that are in this server.

I like the sheer potential of the server, so many things go unseen, taken for granted. I once had a character who would bother the DM's for back stories to items such as the haunted loot, and I was amazed at what stories these items had, heck, I asked a DM once if I could modify existing items, and Sherry took me up on it, then Howland shot me down.

I like the mysteries and the interesting crafting system. And the hidden stuff. I think I should make a rogue as my next char built with insane stealth, lockpick and CT and see just how much I can find. Perhaps apply for a svirf archaeologist called Indiana Gnomes ;).

I like The Beggar.

I like for 1 the epic spoilers and secrets that are hard to learn.

2 the fact everyones a low lvl so I dont feel like lvl 1 noob with a bunch of lvl 40s

3 The permadeath enforcement as it makes sure no one lasts forever and makes PVP/PVE all the more epic. So that we dont ahve the characters that are 4 years old going "IVE BEEN HERE SINCE BETA MANNNN!"

4 The Setting is unique and intresting and has loads of history is badass.

5 The factions the factions are so nice and cool the watch is a really really good faction.

6 How the playerbase can change things and make things crazy!

7 The fact evil people have many many many options! I can be a mugger a assasin a murderer a corupt law enforcer a necromancer a fencer a slaver (Yes pcs can be slavers.) a mad scientist. a freak who breeds a giant mutant army of spiders. (MUCH RESPECT FOR BREEN!) a Dark cultist. a devil worshiper. You name it!

8 Npcs the npcs on this server are rich with personality history backstory and PVP SKILLS. You swore if they where Dm possesed all the time that theyd be leet PCS.

Things I dislike.

1 when pcs do things I IG consider super lame. (such as wanting to fight a tribe of scripted quest goblins over an actual IG tribe of NPC goblins. *coughs coughs*

2 When my apps get denied.

3 when my char dies. (I hate it but when I look back on it its hey this way no one lasts forever and life is presciouse!)

4 When Pcs are super tolerant of drow/duergar/monster and slaver races! I was really pissed at this event where everyone was accepting HONOR DUELS WITH DROW! I my self am sick of this.

5 When my char ideas in a stupid way.

things i like

1. i like to fight and kill things

2. i like calculor he's cool i guess

3. i like to yell nonsense

4. i was lying about number 2

I've been here about a week and this is what I like...

The server isnt static. If you work hard, and do things right, you can easily change the server, in both major and minor ways.

I enjoy all the secrets in the wilderness, all the caves, all the shrines, everything. There is so much room to explore, and to claim a piece of land for your own.

I especially enjoy the feeling of life-like survival. Especially for monstrous races. If you're a ogre, I dont think you'll be running through upper sanctuary screaming; "Me want smash juz!"...

I just really enjoy the server. Its a fun, welcoming place, that has so much depth, it tempts you to make a character on the good, and bad side, to just find ... what, maybe 5% of it, and be happy?

i like scotch. scotchy scotch scotch. here it goes down, down into my belly, mm mm mm

Why I like efu

1. The epic role playing.

2. The rare and awesome spoils from DM quests and plots.

3. The fun events that happen.

4. The easy killing and questing. . . sometimes...

5. And because I can get half the items I need from Greyhawk.
