Corrupted truth

Priestess Thrisa, Supplicant of the Third Eye, Faithful of Savras.

I write to you now, that the truth, can indeed, be corrupted by those who seek power, and at the same time harm others. This corrupted truth is used by Banites, Maskarrans, Gargauthans, devils, and more.

Corruption is the abuse of one's power with no thought or care how it will effect the livelihood of others, it is the actions of those in power who do what they wish to live in decadence and pleasure, at the same time causing those beneath them to suffer. I do not say these people are liars, they can be the most honest people imaginable, however, to stay in power, these people often employ the Corrupted Truth.

The Corrupted Truth is the exaggeration, manipulation, and the literal twisting of the truth, at the same time keeping the message at heart. The corrupted truth is often used to keep the populace in fear, because evidence supports it, the populace -can see- the Truth with there own eyes. So Tyrants -use- this truth to stay in power, saying only they can keep them safe. A corrupt truth is still a truth, however, it is often followed by lies.

Example of a Corrupt Truth:

The citizens of Amberfield are kept in constant fear of goblin, and orc raids. Each week a patrol is sighted, and trackers come in with constant reports of there movements. Whispers run amok in the tavern and the citizenry are subdued, and keep weapons close to them at night. The mayor of this town keeps his people sated with reassurances, and promises to keep them safe, saying that as long as he is re-elected, the goblins will not attack. However, it is little known that the Mayor paid these goblins and orcs to patrol the area, purposely leaving marks of there passing, he also makes sure that they do not get ideas of raiding his settlement, keeping a constant flow of tribute going to them at the same time maintaining his wealth and livelihood. The mayor uses the fear of the orcs and goblins, to maintain his own position. When the citizens become numb, and begin to question the mayor, he has the orcs launch a quick raid, and retreat, thus keeping the citizens in fear.

Here we see that the Mayor has told his citizens the truth, and the absolute truth. He says the orcs will not attack as long as he is in power, and this is true. He pays the patrols and goblins to stay at bay, and at the same time keeps his position as mayor. However, the truth he told is not the -entire- truth, and the missing part is the corruption.

The truth is well known, however, the truth is used to harm the populace, and to keep the mayor in power.

He does not lie to his people, he does not even attempt deceit. He merely exaggerates, controls, and manipulates his people, at the same time keeping them safe from the orcs, and speaking only the truth to his people.

I do not approve of this method, however, I cannot denounce it. It is the truth, and while it is not the entire truth he tells his people, there is no lie in it. A hidden motive yes, deceit and falsehood, no. The citizens may discover the ruse, but what can they do? They are penniless, cannot hire adventurers, the mayor controls the orcs, and he can have them attack the settlement, and leave quickly into the night with all his valuables. Thus the Truth is a method of control, and slavery, not a source of freedom, and enlightenment.
