Ok I have gone back and tried a few different images both .jpgs and .gifs with no luck - all smaller than the 100x100 pixel requirement and all smaller that 8 Kb

To be honest, I haven't tried to change my avatar since I removed my, *clears throat* distracting one.
I don't think I will either, based on this.

This is a known and troublesome problem, very certain you are doing nothing wrong, the wrong is in the forums.

Any idea if there is a timeframe for this to be sorted out?

Have noticed a few more people with the distinctive red X as their Avatar.
Is this something that can be fixed?

Forum work is a pretty low priority right now to be honest. It's a matter of someone getting motivated to work on forums, and being able to look up what is wrong. We lost our original webmaster, so it's a matter of figuring out who is going to handle it and when.
