The Holy Book of Flames

[This book appears to be made of rothe leather and dyed red. On the front, embroidered in impressive gold lettering is the title, "The Holy Book of Flames". Under the impressive title is the Holy Symbol of Kossuth.]

[ Dogma ]

"Those fit to succeed will do so. Kossuth's faith is innately superior to all other faiths, particularly that of Istishia. Fire and purity are the same. Smoke is produced by air in its jealousy. The reward of successful ambition is power. Reaching a higher state is inevitably accomplished by difficulty and personal pain of some sort. Kossuth sends his pure fire to cleanse us all and temper our souls so that we can achieve a pure state. Expect to be tested, and rise to the challenge, no matter what difficulty and pain it brings. Those above you have proven their worth and deserve your service. Guide others to Kossuth's pure light so that he may reforge all life into its essential form."

These are the words handed down from priest to acolyte. These are the holy commands of Kossuth the Firelord. These are the commands that all faithful must embrace. Teach them. Know them. Live them. Or suffer the eternal wrath of Kossuth as you are cast out, into the darkness, outside of the light of the most glorious and pure flame!

[ Sanctuary and the Underdark ]

The Underdark is a land of eternal darkness, ruled only by the wicked. It is a land of stone, most suitable to the weaker element of earth and the faithful of Grumbar, but even rocks can burn if heated hot enough. Even here in the land of stone, in the land of eternal night, Kossuth's pure flame burns just as brightly.

The pure flame of the sun, created by Kossuth as a gift to the lands above, is unseen in the lands below. They forget the way. Just as the heathens above turn against him, worshiping lesser gods, when Kossuth should be placed above all, so too it is below.

The people of this tomb fear the dark. They fear it because they do not know the light. The pure light of the flame casts back all shadow, both material and immaterial. It casts back the darkness that surrounds us and the darkness within.

Drow and Aberrant creatures fear the burning gaze of the sun, because they fear its pure light. Likewise, here in the darkness, they fear the faithful of Kossuth for that is what he brings: pure light from his pure flame.

You will meet resistance, but know that this resistance comes from wicked men and women and their wicked souls. Take pity on them, and show them the way to the light. Should they still turn away, then they must be cast into the fire to be purified, saving their wicked souls from damnation.

[ The Tools of the Faithful ]

"What is my role?" You must ask yourself this. You are a Priest of Kossuth. You stand here, within the land of eternal night, to do one thing: bring forth his most pure and holy flame so that it may banish the darkness below.

There are many types of darkness, aside from what is seen with the eyes, there is the darkness of the soul. You are charged with winnowing the righteous from the wicked, and exposing evil and sin wherever it may lie. You are to put the spiritual well-being of the flock far above their physical well-being, to test and reward the faithful rather than feed or cloth the poor.

This is your role. To forever guard against the incursion of evil within Sanctuary. To root out sinners and heretics, put them on trial, and punish them accordingly. Do not fear the trials and tribulations that you must administer. Remember always that the forces of darkness are wily and elusive, and therefore you must be as clever as you are fanatical, engaging the wicked in abstract philosophical debate, meticulously survey evidence, rely upon mystic divinations, trials of ordeal, or all of the above.

These are the tools of salvation. That which you must burn and cut away is nothing but flesh, raw clay. The soul is forever the object of your concern, and if you are resilient enough, it may be spared any permanent harm. All the wicked must do is renounce their sinfulness or confess to their deeds, and their soul is cleansed.

Yet, be aware the will is a powerful thing, often bent toward evil, and the wicked will often force your hand. Let the wicked know that your devotion to their soul is too great for you to shirk your duty, heavy though it may be. Let the wicked know that if they persist in their resistance you shall cut and burn even deeper.

This work should bring you no pleasure, and you must repent the horrors you work in the name of the higher good. Yet, know well that it is the higher good that you serve. Just as a surgeon must often cut away diseased flesh, in order to save the whole man, so too must you cut and burn away diseased souls in order to save the whole city.

This is your calling. This is your duty. To bring the purifying fire into the heart of every living being in Sanctuary, one convert and one confession at a time.

[ The Role of Other Faiths ]

Do not be blind to the existence of other gods. Yet, know that Kossuth stands apart and above them all, particularly the faith of Istishia.

Priests of the Choking God seek to extinguish all life, drown it in water, and banish the fire so that the world may forever be a frozen block of ice. Resist them at every turn, for the faith of Istishia opens the door to unyielding wickedness.

Priests of other faiths must be watched carefully, to ensure that they do not lead their flocks into darkness. Servants of Dark Deities, such as Shar and Cyric, should be put to the fire the moment they renounce their dark deity. The servants of deities such as Helm and Hoar are to be welcomed, so long as they pledge to stand within the light, and assist us in our battles against evil and wickedness.

[ Divine Proclamation on the Machine ]

The Machine built by the Deep Gnomes of Dunwarren is an evil device that must be destroyed. The flock must never depend upon the Machine rather than the gods.

The Machine lures the righteous away from the light of the flame, and into complacency. Complacency then breeds wickedness.

Never rely upon the Machine, instead, turn to Kossuth who shall provide all that is needed for our protection. Remember always that there is nothing more fearful to those who dwell within darkness than the purifying light of the flame.

[ The Un-Redeemed ]

Mara - A woman in brown robes and white hair, likely fights with her hands. She has a small halfling with her. She is corrupted by greed and vengeance over some slight done to her parents. She is in need of redemption or purification.

Unknown Halfling - A friend of Mara, he is corrupting her with his love of greed. Redemption may be out of reach, but it must be attempted.

Dorlamm - A rock gnome priest standing roughly 3'3 feet tall with a firm build, that often observes his surroundings with a confident expression. He has narrow hazel eyes that are slightly squinted. He seems more muscular than usual for rock gnomes with broad shoulders. He has various whip and blade scars curling down his neck. His little fingers are both cut short at their joints with a number of tattoos across his body. He claims to worship the "Crawler Below" a so-called god "with the power to drown cities in blood and tear down the mightiest of strongholds." This being is also known as "the Wrath of the Depths" and "Urdlen". He is violent and his deity is no doubt a dark one. He is to be approached with caution, captured and offered redemption. If he fails to reject his demonic deity he is to be purified. This demonic being seems to feed on grief, pain and suffering.

Ear - Elven Priestess of a foul and evil drow god. She has hair of a blue-ish tint. She is timid. Yet, her soul is dark indeed. She must be consumed by the purifying fire. A traitor to her own kind. She claims that her deity is a god of dance, and yet in truth, if she lives she will dance on all our graves. Her true name is not Ear, perhaps an abbreviation of her full name, or a nickname.

Morva - Human Male Priest of Bane. He is clearly evil and even went so far as to insult the might of Kossuth. He must be consumed by the Purifying Fire. Redemption may be impossible, but the choice will be given.
