I'm for this too.
So am I, as they certainly don't lack for other kinds of rays that can really put the hurt on a PC.
-Unless there is a proliferation of save vs death equipment, or its more common than I'm aware of. I've seen two items that added three to this save and a slew of plus one ones. If this stuff is easy to get it may be an imbalancing change.
I admit that mine had given me a certain sense of security which probably isn't appropriate or desirable against one of the most fearsome underdark creatures - and its also based on metagaming what a DC is. I don't think our characters would understand just how much fortitude/deathsave stuff they need against beholders.
On the other hand dying to death magic always feels deeply frustrating and cheesy - especially when the save is failed by the narrowest of margins and you were almost level 11 - :cry:
