Letter to Rinaldo Montezzi

To: Rinaldo Montezzi Date: Alturiak 22nd Year 153

I arrived late at the disturbance outside of the Last Stand. However, I have been made aware that one of my men Sentry Grom Velxersingsk is accused of assaulting you.

I was also there as the Watch questioned him, searched him, and ultimately declared it impossible to prove the charges you've made.

As you know, my men - all of them - are forbidden to enter into your territory without my permission. Sentry Grom received no such permission. Although the Watch has concluded him innocent of any crime, I still wish to hear your side of the story.

I have already heard Sentry Grom's side of the story and he proclaims that he is innocent of any crime. However, I have once again ensured that he is fully aware that he may not enter into your territory without my expressed permission.

I do not tolerate insubordination. However, neither will I tolerate one of my men being accused falsely. I wish for any evidence that you have of Sentry Grom's alleged crime sent to me for my review. If I find him guilty of insubordination I will take the appropriate actions that are in my authority to do so.

Signed, Kedrick Reynolds Grand Marshall of the Marching Men

*bump*

Mr. Kedrick Reynolds,

I am extremely careful with my words, and at no time did I accuse Grom of being the assassin. I asked him if he was, and suggested to the Watch that they question and search him. As I'm sure you aware, most half-orcs are shorter if broader than an average male, and Grom is freakishly tall in size, virtually identical in build and height to the half-orc assassin I encountered.

These and other factors have made me suspicious, but as I prefer to believe you an honorable man who would not lie, even if to one who I know you despise, I am inclined to take you at your word if you are certain that he was not responsible.

Prince Rinaldo Montezzi

Very well. As I have already explained I have spoken with Sentry Grom. He claims that he is innocent. As I was not there, and you do not wish to push the issue I will let it drop. I have pressed upon him, once again, that he is not to enter into your domain without my expressed permission.

I do hope that he won't have any trouble with your men. I see no point in pressing the issue if you do not. I also see no point in it if the Watch does not. I am a man who believes in the rule of law. The Council has proclaimed there to be a peace agreement and I will not see one of my men break that agreement. It matters little what I personally think of you or your men.

If you have further trouble with one of my men you are to seek me out or send word. I will deal with the matter, and should they break the law, I will see them properly punished under that law as well as discharged from my service.

Signed, Kedrick Reynolds Grand Marshall of the Marching Men

Kedrick Reynolds,

New evidence has come to light that is quite convincing to me that Grom is the assassin. At the very least, it is certain that he has evidently disobeyed your commands and entered into my realm.

I'm in no position to reveal anything further, but do suggest respectfully that you remove him from your service. He does you no credit.

Prince Rinaldo Montezzi

You do your argument great injustice by insulting me with your most recent letter. If you have evidence, you will present it, and you will not further insult me through trite manipulations. Either you have evidence or you do not. If you have it then present it to me, otherwise you are wasting my time.

Signed, Kedrick Reynolds Grand Marshall of the Marching Men
