Is it just me or is the “Letters and Notes” forum going ballistic? And why if the note is addressed to Joe Schmoe has it been read over 100 times. If it isn’t addressed to one of your PC’s and you’re not a DM, why are you reading it?
IMHO there should be a scribe and or paper charge for all these letters and based on where you leave it a holding/service charge. After all, It’s not like paper is a huge commodity in the underdark and I think the inn keepers would be spending their days going through notes and letters trying to figure who’s who and where to stick it. I think maybe Rak should be made to go postal one day and start killing letter leavers. <(Now that would be funny! )

The forums are a necessary means of communication. It wouldn't be fair to limit it. As for people reading other people's mail, we can't really do anything about that.

If you don't want people reading your letters, just do what I do, send a private message to the player. I write tons of letters, and at least 50% of them are sent in private messages.

I'll honestly answer that it's a way to keep up with plots to some extent for some of us who are not IG often enough to do it IC. I agree that there is a chance some will abuse this OOC knowledge, but it's not the honorable or ADULT thing to do. It makes it WAYYY easier for me when something is mentioned IC to then have some background without having to waste precious IG time RPing it ALLLLLL.

It's kind of neat to see what is going on and interesting developments with characters and factions around EfU.
I know I have posted a crapload of what should probably be private info. But I for one really enjoy seeing what is going on in the Server, and I assume other people do too. I love reading things in the public notices and letters, even the Journals section.
It shows how vibrant and alive the server really is.
EfU has so much going on, and in so many different time zones, that it's easy to feel left out and like you are missing out.
If you know something/someone is doing something cool that your character might interact with, you then have the chance to "inadvertantly" have your character initiate contact with another character or faction and join in the fun.
Sometimes it's fun to consider what is going on as a backdrop to what your character is doing, and you can then react in the way you see fit.

Personally I dont see anything wrong with reading other ppl's letters OOCly so long as you dont apply the knowledge ICly.

Doesn’t it cost like 10 or 15 gold IG to have a letter scribed and or to buy blank paper? I think some PC’s would be going broke with the number of letters they’ve written.
But what do I know...

I wonder how much toilet paper costs? There are always going to be things that make efu different from RL, letters and notes are one of them.
The forums are a neccessary part of the game, especially for people who can only afford to play an hour or so each night. They allow you to make the most of your time IG, by setting things up beforehand. As for reading other people's letters, i'm completely fine with it. It does help to know a bit about something ahead of time, so that when you learn IG, you don't have to cover -all- of the details. Just don't metagame, its usually not too difficult to do. If you've something to say that's private, use a PM or faction/hidden forum to do so.

Just a thought...
What do you guys think of an IG postal service faction, (maybe a scribe or two and a couple of runners)? Would any of you use it? (It would be low XP and a lot of role playing)

I think that'd be a brilliant idea! Proves that not all RP has to consist of devious plots and killing and such. Although if you introduce that into the faction I'll be impressed!

Too difficult and unwieldly, I fear. It'd be ideal, but I'm not sure how it'd work logistically!

Sometimes I just think it's fun to tease other players by letting them see what they're not involved in :P

I'd love for you to expound on this.

Does this have a constructive element, or is this just a drive-by potshot?
Thanks

I've done allot of work around a Postal Service type of thing. Considered a bunch of points, even wrote up an application for it at one point. However in the end, as much as I tweaked it, I didn't see it going anywhere really. So I dropped the concept.

Perhaps it could be run as a government job, like the US post office. Maybe it could be made a branch of an existing faction like the Watch, Spellguard or the spellguard associates? Then their could even be minimal pay and or promotions involved.

Panama got it pretty well.
We don't have a post office for the same reason we don't have bathrooms. It's entirely unnecessary, and however many people say they think it would be fun, it would turn out to not be. Playing a Letter Clerk, is really just not interesting. You would spend your time...sorting mail?
It just doesn't make a lot of sense, and both DM and Player effort is better spent elsewhere!

I like to read other people's mail to see who is getting the most DM attention and loot. I then go to my elitist chat room and complain about it non-stop about how I'm not a DM favorite and then I point out everyone's short comings but my own and then go back to reading mail.
Sometimes I'll even login secret accounts to write mail to my own characters to make them sound real bad-ass and watch to see how many people view it.

Yes, I like to keep up-to-date on the latest DM conspiracies by forensically inspecting the Letters and Notes forum.

Did you get that memo? I'll be sure you get a copy of it.
