Just thought I'd rehash this.
Please, Please, Please set people to hostile if you're going to PvP.
Some spells only attack hostile people.
Rogue Sneak Attack fires wonky if your opponent isn't hostile.
Attacking someone who is attacking you while unhostile means you have to be quick and open the radial menu to attack if you don't provoke and AoO on the person you're attacking, which can shave precious seconds for your mark, all of which are vital when someone is initiating PvP at you.
As well as finding a hotkeyed hostile command, or entering it manually, or finding them on the player list. All takes time.
So, If you're gonna PvP, Please make sure at least thirty times that you have your opponent set to hostile.
Thankfully nothing terrible happened, but this happened to me twice in the course of about six minutes, when attacked by two non-hostile people, and would have lead to some expected unfriendliness.
Just a reminder.
<3 to you all.

Set people to hostile if you're going to PvP.
Fixed.
This thread was inspired by recent or semi-recent events -- certainly, we need not remind our playerbase that violating the clearly outlined PvP rules will be looked upon very harshly.
Also, in case somebody didn't know: if you intend to attack only a few of a party of people, instead of setting just the target(s) hostile, you naturally set the entire party hostile so as to provide the target(s) and any allies in the nearby vicinity with a fair opportunity to join in ("party" in this case does not refer to a party in the mechanical sense; if you don't know what it means, look it up). Failing to do so is no different from not setting the intended target(s) hostile in the first place.

PvP infringements are a form of cheating, and thus the best way to get yourself banned.

This minirant was My bad, I think. I relogged to fix a VFX bug and he was still hostile on my screen, so I assumed I was hostile on his. The second was a DM(if he is refering to what I think he was refering to). IMO, Ban the DM, I had an excuse. >.<

My suggestion to everyone is this: Use the voice command "/c hostile all".
This command sets the entire server hostile with the exception of your group. If you are PvPing with others ensure that they are grouped with you.
The reasons for doing this are primarily:
1. It gives no message to the other players involved. When you click someone hostile from the Player List it sends a little yellow message, "<Character Name> now dislikes you!"
Through using the voice command I pointed out above this message is not sent and therefore they have no advanced warning. It prevents metagaming and normally maintains the element of surprise.
2. There is always a chance that others not involved in the conflict will show up and join your enemies. While it is their responsibility to set you to hostile, it is simply much easier for everyone involved if you simply set everyone to hostile. Additionally, they may not set you to hostile and you would then experience the problems that RwG outlined above.
You can set this down as a hot key. You can do this by following these instructions:
Step 1: Find an empty hotkey slot.
Step 2: Right click the slot.
Step 3: From the menu, at the very top, select "Custom Text Macro".
Step 4: You'll see a little text box asking for a label. Type "Hostile All" without the quotation marks then click Ok.
Step 5: You'll get another little text box asking you to input command. Type "/c hostile all" without the quotation marks and then click Ok.
To unhostile everyone on the server repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 then do these two remaining steps.
Step 4: In the text box asking for a label type "Unhostile All" without the quotation marks then click Ok.
Step 5: In the text box asking for a input command. Type "/c unhostile all" without the quotation marks and then click Ok.
That's it. Whenever you get ready to enter or leave PvP just click the appropriate hotkey, or type those commands yourself.

Also, to add to the above, I suggest creating hotkeys for sparring mode and full damage mode as well. This allows you to switch between them quickly.
There are certain situations (and I've been in them!) that require you to act fast. For example, let's say you want to give a PC a good death, you've beat him down, you're RPing it out and damn it - that's when his posse shows up! You fully intend to kill this guy but you are trying to give him a good send off, so now you can switch to full damage mode instantly, land your killing blow and run.
The reverse is also true there are times when you intend to only beat the crap out of someone and not kill them, but because you've recently killed someone else you happen to be on full damage mode. Oops. Although I don't believe the normal sparring mode creates the normal penalties you get from subdual, I find it far preferable.
Since the introduction of another voice command allowing you to pull backpacks you no longer have to beat someone for 5 minutes before they drop their stuff. I also recommend that for a hotkey, especially for Watchmen. There may be times when you know someone you are arresting has a watch key, and it's rather pointless to arrest them knowing that they can simply walk out of the jail.
So here are some additional hotkeys:
Full Damage Mode: /c subdual full
Sparring Mode: /c subdual spar
Yank Backpack: /c yank_pack

Not actually related to the OP but... What are the practical differences between the non FD modes?

Spar makes the person on the ground for a short time.
Subdual makes it a longer time.

Well subdual keeps an enemy on the ground long enough for a arrest or search, and leaves a AC penalty, and sparing mode knocks and opponent down for a short time and doesn't leave a AC penatly.

I would like to remind the Dms to hostile NPCs they know in advance you plan on attacking/killing. Two different times I had NPCs escape Arsden because they weren't set to hostile, and ran around avoiding his attacks, not to mention the pain-in-ass it is to attack blue NPCs. Oh yeah, the AoO's/sneak attacks as well. :(

i've never had that happen to me, but I wager you can send the DMs a tell? Anyway, I haven't done much PVP so this is a good reminder! It's easy to forget

Of course I sent tells. By then it was too late.
