The Private Diary of Vruk Renthark

Vruk's thoughts are arraigned in a battered old logbook with Helm's crest stylized upon the cover. Several deep scratches have been made into the symbol's face.

Stand, Wait, and Watch Carefully.

Alturiak 7, 1375 DR

I am new to Sanctuary, and already I have learned much of its people and history. It is perpetually divided, and for decades men have been willing to die for which particular sort of freedom is best. In the more heavily populated ward, an often-absent warlord holds much of the settlement's true power. Where once a bureaucrat would have held the leash of this warrior and his battalions of enlisted men, he now answers to no one but his elusive mistress. He is lax in his duty, and his lechery does dishonor to the dictates of Helm. Still... he performs as a committed Helmite would in most other respects.

The ruling body of the Council has lost some of its luster and sway in Sanctuary's affairs, but it is still potent in its ability to pass laws and rule on cases. A cabal of wizards toils ceaselessly in study, and while I would have once respected their commitment to inquiry, their authoritarian behavior has left a sour taste in my mouth.

In Sanctuary Below, the word of Prince Montezzi is law. Truthfully, I do not see the Prince and the Bedine ruler of Upper as overly different individuals. Montezzi is unwilling to cloak his naked villiany, though the dead litter the streets of Upper as well. Might makes right in both cases.

To best honor the Maid, I must align myself with one of the numerous powers jockeying for resources. I have observed the field carefully, and Fortune shall ensure my success.
