I have an interesting idea. It's always seemed kind of odd that a good clerics buffs work the same on an evil PC as they do on a good PC. You would think that a deities blessings would be more affective on someone that had similar beliefs as the deity had and the opposite would be true for large departures in viewpoint.
Basically let's take a CE fighter fighter, gets bull strength from a LG priest of Tyr.... He would probably have some strange feelings, or feel something at least...
So, here is my suggestion. For alignment differences that are opposite ends of the spectrum, or maybe even less, maybe just good versus evil. For those differences, there is a slight amount of damage done to the recipient when they receive a beneficial spell cast on them. Maybe depending on the severity of the alignment shift, or on the power of the priest.
What do you all think? I think it would be pretty cool to see an evil priest basically tell a good fighter that he could fill him with his lords strength to aid in combat they'll both be in, but it's gonna hurt.....
Just random thoughts from Senur Ix... not sure how hard it would be to implement either.

HP damage? I wouldn't think so. The effectiveness of the buff itself, however, would make more sense.
E.g. Lawful good casting bull's strength on chaotic evil, only giving 1d4 instead of the usual 1d4+1.

I am opposed to this. It automatically makes clerics stronger as they will always be of proper alignment and I see no benefit to this. Then you would have to also account for protection from alignment spells and what not. Simpliest way to do this is figure out who is evil IC and simply do not give them spells.

hmmm, how does this make cleric's stronger?
I'm not set on the actual negative behavior, just that it makes sense that there is something there. If it is just less affective, that works as well.

This is a hassle that I can see no benefit gained from. I am whole heartedly against this. Clerics should not have means to detect someone else alignment, especially not with any one random spell. if a priest gives a blessing to someone of an entirely differing set of values, then the priest is at fault. Know who you give your deities blessing too. Ir a Tormite knowingly buffs a banite, then I'd suggest, instead of the banite taking damage, that a priest get his ass kicked by Torm. And no, I'm not looking for a scripted solution to a role-playing event. [/rant]

If you want to do that- Go ahead and send the player a tell, and say if you feel like it, and you are evil or not my deity's alignment, you'll feel such and such feelings. People have done that to me before.

Or a better idea. If you worship a good god always have a paladin TO QUEST WITH YOU! Or actually ask who the person worships!

Just don't offer buffs to people that you feel your Deity wouldn't agree with, end of discussion surely?

That's not always an option when there are just five of you on the server, my good Doctor. And you truly expect an honest answer from someone you suspect is a little ethically challenged?
There are numerous ways in game this can be dealt with, and some good suggestions here.

Yeah, this works pretty well. You can also try and bribe them to follow your deity with the promise of blessings if they do.

Hm. That -sounds- extremely borderline to me.
Unrelated to that,
Usually clerics resort to asking to pray to their diety in order to grant someone spells..
If a cleric, just buff everyones without trying to learn anything about if others respect his faith, well-- he is stupid. His fault.

Or even better, depending on your deity, you can demand that those who want blessings from you give praise to your deity. No tithe, no prayer of thanks, no tribute what so-ever then no blessing. If the hardcore CE Rogue is willing to give praise to Tyr in exchange for buffs, and you later find out that he is a CE Rogue then that opens up interesting RP opportunities. Perhaps he is open to redemption! (Or perhaps you will feel guilty and need to somehow cleanse yourself of his evil taint.)

As a Loviataran Cleric I have often asked that someone hit me before I heal them or provide a buff. Now that request usually makes it clear who is really interested and willing and those that would stay further away from me. I doubt any Goodly Good would hit me just for PfE or healing, but if they do, all the better.
