All prosperous kingdoms are forged by the blade in the beginning.
In the wake of the conflict in which it was born, the young Montezzi fiefdom enjoys a period of peace and stability. The streets are patrolled by a regular force, order and prosperity following closely behind. Overtures toward enemies have been made, mercy offered. War is rejected for peace and security. The dust settles, and a bright future in the darkness does not look to be an unattainable thing anymore.
And yet malice and conceit boils in the hearts of the grim dwarves. Long have they despised and envied the works and feats of other races, and long have they sequestered themselves in caves and dwellings removed from the city. Yet this unpleasant, bitter folk now turn their hateful gaze to the newly ascendant House Montezzi, and seeing the promise and the wealth others hold, they arm for war in a time of peace. As the Prince Rinaldo makes calls for scribes and stewards to better usher his fiefdom and its subjects into a prosperous age, the dwarves sharpen their axes. As Prince Rinaldo sees to his lord's duties, cleaning up the streets and employing the homeless in honest work, the dwarves muster in their dark cave, whispering their plans for murder with a disturbing, feverish excitement.
They will not deign to debate on the legitimacy of their false pretense for assault on the House Montezzi. In the tradition of dwarfkind, these sickly beings of small mind and large axes have chosen to spurn diplomacy in favour of brutal war.
The Montezzi House will not crumble beneath the weight of dozens of iron-clad, frenzied dwarven soldiers, no matter how loud their warriors clamour for blood that need not be spilt. One only hopes the dwarves turn away from the dark path they seem set on marching down, for the blood of many innocents shall be on their hands.
