4th Edition IRC Playtesting

I'll be running a weekly session of 4E lite in #DND4 on Darkmyst. We're using simplified rules based on what's been released by WotC so far, and are limited to pregenerated characters also released by WotC for their 4E Experience demonstrations.

The characters can be downloaded here. No more than two people can play the "same" character (just change the name and/or gender); the exception is Skamos. No more than one Tiefling. :x

The official "What you need to know" sheet can be downloaded here. I won't expect you to have thoroughly read and understood it, but if you're interested in joining you should skim it and have it open while playing.

While the ultimate objective is to see how the 4E rules play out, we'll probably get caught up in a lot of non-4E-specific roleplay. Don't worry too much about what you think your pregenerated character should be doing - just be reasonable, and try to have fun without stepping on another player's toes.

The next session will be either Thursday, May 1st, ; Saturday, May 3rd ; Tuesday, May 6th Saturday, May 10th, at 1PM US CST (-6 GMT) depending on who shows up. Don't worry about wanting to play but not making it and don't worry about showing up one day and not on another. We won't worry too much about continuity.

Thursday went great! I'm glad I got to see a larger group in action against more enemies. Combat also seemed to go a lot smoother - maybe because there were more people, dealing more damage, as well as minions instead of Skeleton Warriors.

Game History: Raiders of Oakhurst (Day 2, In-progress)

Day 1: In-progress (Dusk) In the crypt to the west Enemies defeated: Skeleton Warriors x3

Session 1 Snoteye: Erais (Cleric) Skrillix: Tira (Warlock) Cruzel: Skamos (Wizard) [Used daily power: Acid Arrow]
Other notes: One of them got the locket and the silver knife. I don't remember who.

Day 1: In-progress (Nearing midnight) In the ruined mountain keep Enemies defeated: Kobold minions x4, Kobold skirmishers x2

Session 2 Snoteye: Erais Skrillix: Tira [has collected 6 kobold head] Cruzel: Skamos [still hasn't rested for Acid Arrow recovery; has the knife and locket; 10 damage; 5 in the tail, 5 in the gut] Beggar: Kathra (Fighter) [11 damage, all from Skamos' burst spell] Talir: Riardon (Ranger) [6 damage, grazing wounds from kobolds]

Day 1: Over Day 2: In-progress (After midnight) In the ruined mountain keep Enemies defeated: Hobgoblin Berserker, Hobgoblin Soldiers x2

Session 3 Snoteye: Erais [taken 4 damage] Skrillix: Tira [has collected 3 hobgoblin heads; taken 8 damage, used one healing surge, used Curse of the Dark Dream] Talir: Riardon [taken 1 damage, used one healing surge]
The group has met a gnome prisoner and freed him, as well as learned a little more about the keep.

Game History: The Second Son (Total Party Kill on Session 1) Day 1: Total Party Kill (After nightfall) Beneath Westfall Tower Enemies defeated: Hobgoblin Soldier, Hobgoblin Warcaster

Session 1 Lisa, then Scotty: Tira Snoteye: Erais Talir: Riardon
The party lost to five Hobgoblin Archers given minion HP (any hit would have killed them).

So... you're doing tabletop PnP... on IRC? That's creative, to say the least. I'll think about it, but you'll have to teach me some. A lot.

It's not that hard, really, and it should seem somewhat familiar if you've any degree of mechanical competence in NWN. At least I don't have to teach you THAC0.

Planing to use gameserv or are you going to have a board next to your comp?

We've been using gameserv, and talking/emotes in formats like

He walks around and says "Hey, I'm speaking!"

Etc.

Its been really fun, and never having played PNP before in my life, I'm not really having any trouble jumping in, even if I ask a stupid question now and again.

I'd like to say thanks to everyone who joined in! Now that you've stormed the keep, the next session will lead off with some plotty stuff on Saturday, at the same time. Let me know if you can't make it, but want logs of the session.

Once again, an interesting session. The GameServ dice are frustrating as ever, and the adventure we used (since most of the usual players weren't available) was wild.

Total Party Kill. 4E hasn't made things "too easy" after all.

Next session will be Tuesday at 2PM, and if everyone's back we can do Raiders of Oakhurst. Otherwise, I'll try throwing something together myself.

This is what happens when I'm not killing everything with Tira Duskmeadow's mad damage dealing abilities. <_<

I'll make sure to come next time to replenish my stock of severed heads.

Raiders of Oakhurst seems to have been balanced much better than Second Son. We had a few somwhat-close calls, but nothing as brutal as the TPK.

Next session will continue Raiders of Oakhurst, as the party retraces its steps and tries to help the gnomes, on Saturday, at 1PM US CST.
