How about an afk command that actually casts a STATE on the afk person so a symbol appears above their head (or even a continuous ZZZZ emote) maybe /o afk or /o e afk
Just so players know whether or not to try to communicate with you when you're in a pub

I don't think a continuous ZZZZ emote would be the right thing to do, mainly because Asgrim tends to fall asleep in Rockbottom's common room, and, since kicking him or yelling really loud usually are the only ways to wake him up, I'd really hate to give other people the wrong impression by not responding. I'm sure there'll be a narcoleptic character (*starts pondering*) at some point. :D
But a looping [AFK] (or something that wouldn't spam the logs) could be handy.

This is only really a problem when the other players (or, at least, their characters) take offence... Which is kinda lame, assuming the person in question will at least send a Tell explaining the situation. Taking into account that I'm still a n00b, I've not had this happen to me yet.

We had such a command on another server.. and.. What can I say, leading a discussion nearby can get difficult since this continuos "ZzZzZzzz" unnecessarily spams the message windoew, it's bad enough three other groups are talking about "I need work!" etc and some new players in the background talking to the same spamming NPC over and over.. not that I blame new players for that, I just wish the NPC lines that come up over and over -again- could be made so that they only are displayed to the PC who actually spoke to that NPC.. for instance "Want to see my wares?" - "Sure!" - "Well, have a look around.." is nothing I really need to see all the time.

As someone who likes to see as little OOC text as possible (tells aside), I'd probably get buggered to no end with an [AFK] tag floating around nearby. The ZzZzZ way, and similar, would also be a bit annoying.
Is it really that much of a problem? In situations where you are already interacting with people, a quick tell or similar suffices, and in public situations such as taverns, etc, there is nothing that keeps you from waiting a bit once someone goes afk, something that's pretty easy to figure out once you've waited a minute or so without getting an answer.

Lets make it more simple: If you're going to be afk longer than couple min max, log out.

A good idea, but I don't really think this is necessary. If you really want to be afk, walk into an inn room or some other quiet place and no one will most likely bother you.
Also, as Paha said, if you plan to be afk for longer than just a few mins, why not just log out? The server is full very rarely (at least on my poor GMT playing times ). On the other hand, if the server is full there's probably someone trying to get in too, so why do you deserve to take his spot IG when you're not even playing at the moment?

Yeah. I don't like this sort of OOC thing intruding on my game. If you need to excuse yourself, you can find a way for your character to excuse themself. Or if it's only for a few seconds, don't even bother saying anything. It's easy enough to scroll up and jump right back into the conversation.

I propose an afk lounge. I've seen it on another server. It's an area that you can go to via an item, unless you are in combat. You can't rest there.

And if you know someone's following you? At least a few people would use it to hide and reappear 5 minutes later once you've lost them.

Yeah I've seen the afk lounge idea, but on the same token I dont see what the problem is with popping up some icon above their head (not a spammed message)
Something like making your self paralysed (slow red glowing effect)
Also BEING there is important because people KNOW you will be back, logging out is out of sight out of mind.
I've more than a few times waiting in a pub waiting for somebody to come back from afk talking to other people knowing they will be back eventually. Then continuing my conversation with them afterwards.
If you're going for a meal break or doing some other thing greater than 5 mins then it probably is better to log out. But if you're in the middle of something or a group is waiting for you that you WANT to be part of an afk mode is MORE than reasonable.
You dont have to make up a looping animation for AFK though that is a possibility.

Why does it have to be so hard for everyone? If you're AFK, log out! Easy as that!

Think about it this way, if you are going to be afk for more than a moment, log out which takes what... 5-6 clicks max? Versus having a DM/scripter write, create some script or area to do the same thing, which may or may not have the effect that you think you want. Seen the sit still for a while and a script will tell you to move or log you out, and that's just as annoying. So either go sit in a dark corner in the inn, or log out. Easy.

To tell the truth, if I was doing a script, it would likely auto-loggout, or it would let you be AFK in the fugue. I really see AFK scripts as a negative thing, not an improvement to the server.
