Okay, I'm thinking about bringing a character from another server, along with a bit of a player faction he was in, to Sanctuary. The idea is that this character has been gone from ****** a very long time. Now, some think him dead, or MIA, or whatever, but he's really fallen through a crack in the crust and found his way here. He was a member of a player faction called the Gleaming Blades, and I'd like to remake him and play him here.

Is this allowed? Also, it would be appreciated if you did not simply say no, but give reasoning. I always love to hear a DM's reasoning.

No. You shouldn't do this.

The reason is that we have no control over what happens in your other server. Your character may have memory of elements such as places, people and events which we do not consider to be appropriate to our setting.

Plus, it's so much more exciting if you come up with fresh ideas! Give your poor, retired character a proper burial and move on.

Or, if you do make him, don't tell anyone you played him on another server. Then, nobody will be any the wiser, and figure his background (assuming it's an EFU-appropriate background) is just that, his background!

Yes sir Scotty, that was my plan. The character is extremely hard to retire, for some odd reason, and I usually have a great deal of fun replaying him. The advantage to this idea is that I have a complete background, complete with old friends, battles, and experiences I can use to deepen my RPing. I know this can be done normally, but it's a great deal easier to remember things that actually (well, virtually) happened than to make them up. The background is certainly nothing app-requiring, and would fit well with EfU, IMO. If you would like details, feel free to PM me. I won't go ahead with it without your definite permission, one way or another.

As I said earlier, feel free to ask me about his background in a PM. I assume you're talking about things that just plain don't exist in EfU, yes? Please do ask, I'm happy to tell his story.

I would not allow this personally. The reasons I would give would be that it would be detrimental to the contuinity of our setting to allow this. The other players might not be comfortable with seeing a character they had seen on another server appear in the underdark all of a sudden.

It's like seeing Frodo Baggins suddenly appear in books written by other authors. Okay, you still have creative control, but to the readers of both novels, it is pretty grating to see.

So no. Come up with something new, or a new slant on your old character with a new name. After all, a rose by any other name... etc.

Ah, Nuke's reasoning I can easily accept. I had not thought of there being other *******ans here, but I can see how it could be possible. Agreed, I'll do something else. Thank you all for giving your reasons, and not just stamping down the rubber stamp of "No/Lock" Much appreciated.
