Hardly a day now goes by without me finding the custom loot from quest rewards in the hands of various merchants, for thousands of gold. Often as many as four or five items at one time. This, in my opinion, is pretty sad, as fun, quirky and interesting items get thrown away instead of being properly put to use.
I understand that it can be tempting to cash in a couple of hundreds of gold extra, but please, can you not first try to sell them to another player? I'm sure there are a lot of people who'd jump at the opportunity to buy an enchanted item for the merchant buying price. Sure, it takes a bit of extra effort, but it would, in the end, let you get just as much money for the item, with the added benefit of not putting an item to waste, but rather making some lucky sod a happy, lucky sod.
And, we wouldn't have to despair at seeing all those interesting items rot in the hands of various greedy NPC's in waiting for a reset.
So please, please give selling your fancy findings to your fellow players a thought and a try before running to the nearest merchant with them; It's such a waste otherwise.

Selling loot to NPCs is criminal!
It really should be kept in circulation with PC sales rather than NPC sales. You'd also get more money for the item by selling it to a PC. I don't understand how it is in any way better to flog it to a NPC.

Send me a quick PM with the names of the items and the names of the merchants. The majority of those items shouldn't be sellable.

I can confidently say that there is probably over a thousand pieces of customized ambient loot that drop randomly throughout the mod now, the vast majority of which is marked stolen to prevent being sold to NPCs.
There is some loot ("Hrunk's Drinking Outfit," etc.) that is deliberately not marked stolen or plot to allow for it to be sold to NPC merchants -- generally this is the loot that directly drops off of specific bosses. These particular pieces of loot are just so common that I don't mind them being sold.
I would also be curious as to which specific items are being sold, because other than a few very common items that drop off of quest bosses nothing should really be able to be sold to merchants.

It might be that these items I've seen are such, then; Items such as the Slaughtering Hook, the Spear of Darkness (or whatever it is called, from the Hoar Temple quest). I have PM'ed a short list of the items I'm perfectly certain of (which aren't that many, since I don't want to screw things up with my bad memory) to Arkov, and I'll continue to update it as I see more items. I'll send it to you too, Howland.

I understand your frustration Wrex, but certain characters, for one reason or another, would prefer to deal with a merchant rather than become a merchant themselves. One of my characters, Talia, pretty much only sells to Norma because she's uncomfortable bartering and feels sorry for Norma.
Once a merchant's guild gets off the ground and players know they can quickly sell their magical items to them, I'm sure you'll see far fewer magical items end up in the hands of NPCs.

Alot of the oneshot items are bieng sold, such as the book with web 1/use as an example, because it's worth say 200 gold (example) too and therefore people prefer the gold to the item. Any sort of loot is worth quite a bit at a merchant if it casts a spell I think. I'll take item names when I see them, I tend to check the merchants alot for loot.

As part of one of the two merchant group pushes...
You're all mostly right- dealing with NPC merchants are so much easier and we're nearly impossible to find because we're either
A) yammering about politics
B) don't ever log in anymore because we're scared of those damn water elementals/Councilor Bhast/whatever
C) too broke to match the prices merchants give
I don't really know a solution to this, to be totally honest. Why would you sell to a PC that's a pain to just FIND when you make more gold selling to NPCs. It goes against logic and against character, as someone mentioned earlier about why they sell to little old Norma. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts on the topic?

99% of the loot can't be sold, the other 1% is so common that I truly don't mind it being sold. I really don't think there's a problem.
That said, with the increasing numbers of ambient loot dropping around I'd expect and like to see more PC merchants and the like.

Case in point:
I had a Beholder's Eye I lacked the skill and/or class to use.
Nora would give me 500gp for it.
I attempted to sell it around at slight markup over that, to no avail.
I took the 500gp.
Tis fortune to me, and considering how many missions I have run on that cost me more than I earned, it was a windfall.

One way to solve the problem of not being able to find a PC to buy an item might be to put up a small note on the public messaging board naming what items you have together with a price estimate. This doesn't just apply for actual equipment, but also such things as magical wands, spell scrolls and the like. For in my opinion, selling an item to another player for 100 gold is more worthwile than to an NPC for twice that, when possible and plausible.
Of course I don't expect people to act OOC, or give themselves a shitload of trouble to sell things to PC's. But even just waiting a day or two with NPC-selling an item, while putting a post up on the forums about it, would give the opportunity for someone who would wish to buy it to do so, and if no one takes a bite at it, you can be rather sure that no one wants to, and sell it to an NPC without doubts.
-EDIT- I see that a load of these posts have popped up already during my absense, cool!

My characters are not that altruistic.
I would rather sell to an NPC merchant for the price they offer than take a loss on it. Further, knowing that the NPC vendors are going to apply considerable markup, it insures that if the item falls into the hands of a potential threat to me, it did so at great cost to them, and considerable profit to me as well, whereas if I were to sell it to such an unforeseen threat at a discount, not only would I be the poorer for it, but they would be the richer.
Finally, carrying items of value that I cannot use does me little good, and in fact, only gives bag snoopers and thugs an opportunity to rob me of the item(s) while I am flat on my back. Gold can be kept secure in the bank.

I find it unbelievable that people would be silly enough to sell 1/day items. What in the world is actually worth that 750 gp? It's not like are stores are full of better stuff.

I seem to recall that book being one time use, not 1/day, but I might have misread it.

The book is definitely single use, and is a relic from one of the very first areas I built. It has now been correctly marked as stolen to prevent being sold.
As I've said, there are some items (generally low-powered one that drop off of boss loot) that I do not mind being sold.

That was a mistake on my part when writing that...it is 1/use. I type the wrong words entirely sometimes and didn't reread what I had typed to check it. Awfully sorry. :)
