Underdarkness

Something that has puzzled me a bit while playing my human ranger is how, exactly, to handle the darkness out in the wilds. In most places, there, at least engine-wise, seems to be a bit of background light. Would it be possible for a human, with experience and good eyesight, to be able to see, if not perfectly at least movements and silhouettes, in these areas without a torch or similar exposing light source? In other words, is there really a sort of background/faraway light, or is it just an engine thing?

And in the much darker areas, such as the cave near Thomas' shop, is it possible to see anything at all?

On one hand, I can see how it's supposed to be perfectly dark down the caves, but on the other hand, unless the darkness is unnatural, light travels very far in such areas, as long as you aren't exposed to temporary flashes of stronger light, and let your eyes adapt. A bit of guidance here would be nice.

This is something of a deviation from canon, but in our setting it can be assumed that the Underdark is filled with various sources of light (fungi, lichens, etc.) that allow for poor visibility in most caves and areas.

Okay, good to know.
