Rations, Resting, and Recouperating

So it occurred to me....when you're sick mom always said "You have to feed a cold to get better!" meaning you have to eat when you're sick.

I'd like to suggest incorporating rations into this.

Disease and wounds can be healed by staying at an inn. What if we added eating into the 'resting' process?

My suggestion is that if you eat rations within 1 *edit* Round *edit* of resting (inn, bedroll, etc) you get a +1 to fort save vs disease AND 1d4 extra hp healed.

Basically, you'd have to eat the rations then rest immediately. The Fort save and HP would be added on AFTER you complete an entire rest cycle. If it's interuppted or you cancel it, the effect is lost. Also the fort save is lost once the check against the disease or poison is made, win or lose.

This would bring a bit more RP and effects to Rations, which I think are some of the coolest items in the game.

other food items like Mud Crab Meat or Cooked foods, could have the same effect.

This would not apply to other edible items such as pastries which would be basically sugar and not very 'healthy' for you.

Thoughts?

I like this actually, I want to see people need a reason to carry food.

I know people hate it, but a starvation system would do EfU good.

No starvation scripts..the most annoying, usless things in the world. Next we would need scripts for useing the bathroom and sleeping..

I agree that a starvation system is a bad idea, but that's been discussed many times already.

I also agree with the idea of using food to increase the HP healed from resting. More complicated foods, more expensives foods, etc., would heal more than, say, plain sporebread. It would encourage people to get more into the craft skill of cooking. I don't think a + to Fortitude makes much sense, though.

There's no real downside to this that I can see.

I agree, no starvation/thirst stuff. CoA has that and, personally, I found it somewhat annoying.

The justification I have for the +1 fort vs disease/poison is that your body now has fuel from food to boost the immune system to overcome the sickness or poison.

As far as different/expensive foods doing more help we could have a sliding scale of effectiveness:

Sporebread/Barrelstalk soup - 1d2 extra HP healed mud crab meat/cooked chicken/etc - 1d4 Very Fine Cooked Meal/Etc - 1d6 (maybe 1d8, DM choice)

Honestly, I think a flat 1d4 extra HP healed implementation is easier to do that way the DM's don't have to go through and create 3 scripts or sort through the likely dozens of food items they've created and apply a different one.

If they have an item type: food or something, they can just carte blanche slap the 1d4 script onto all of that item type pretty painlessly.

I like the idea of food augmenting the health healed from resting, with varying types healing more or less- I just don't want to see it as a requirement TO rest.

this would be interesting I think. Could make it simple too, basically you could allow food to heal a certain die roll of hp every 6 hours like resting. Like cheap food does 1d2, then one slightly more 1d4, etc. Don't really have to tie it to resting even. If you eat a meal you feel better. True to life even. I've gotten some whoopings in my life and I did feel better after eating a meal.... Even if I didn't sleep afterwords....

Yes, I like this idea. Although I also like the idea of needing food to rest period I imagine too many people would not like this so much, meh. Still, eating "healthy" food before resting is a great idea.

It's actually harder to get to sleep if you eat something directly before going to bed.

Says you. <_<

Scientifically proven.

9lives It's actually harder to get to sleep if you eat something directly before going to bed.

evidently, someone has never had to much to eat at thanksgiving or christmas..

that being said, for what it is worth i LOVE the idea of having to have food to even rest. I play on another server (FOR SHAME ON ME I KNOW) and it makes me remember that my character has needs other than just to kill things, which makes me think of him/her as more "real". Of course, this other server really is no where near the RP of this one... but it is cool. I just would like to NOT see it get to the point that you have to 1) go hunt your food 2) skin the animal (even having to get the skill) 3) build a fire 4)cook the food (with a skill check)

all before you can rest once.

My two bits, for what it is worth

My idea was NOT for people to HAVE to eat in order to rest, but merely that eating would have benefits WHEN resting.

The idea of having to eat before resting will not be liked by the general populace I don't think. It will likely only an annoyance factor.

djspectre's original idea fits in nicely with our new cooking system.

The one we're doing practically nothing with. <.< It should be very easy to make food augment HP healed from rest, or even attenuate if you eat too much.
