I think it would be a good idea if there was a rule against the use of bad language as it sickens me to have to listen to it used in real life and then have to listen to it on a game.

F--- is already not allowed in game.
I think "Feck" should go too frankly though.
I find it amusing that slavery, torture, suicide and much worse acts of debauchery are acceptable, but a few curse words in a grown up RP setting are not.
To each his own.
Hmmm, the underdark is filled with some raucous bad people. I don't think eliminating profanity is exactly in keeping with that. However, I had no idea the F___ was not allowed, though I don't think i've ever uttered it in game as I don't tend to play thugs.
Perhaps now is a good time for us to list some nice underdark curses?
Do like Farscape and Battlestar Gallactica have done and come up with a replacement for the big four....
Frell for F___ Dren for Shit etc etc
(Those were from Farscape, we should come up with our own..)
I was unaware that EfU was in a fantasy universe that bad words were never used by angry, mean, rude, or generally bad people. >.>
As far as I'm concerned, every variant spelling of the word in question is much worse than the word in question when spelled correctly. Do not pretend to think that applying variant spellings to words you're not supposed to use excludes you from the rule. I find that pretentious and deeply insulting.
However, I will say that if anybody has a problem with strong language, this server is not for them. Most people should know by now that we encourage conflict, especially the non-lethal kind, and strong language is absolutely a part of that. I've personally witnessed some extremely... colorful (and, not to get me wrong, entertaining) insults, yet know that if I was particularly uptight I would have felt offended.
This is a complicated issue. No one is going to get banned for the use of this word. Other words (such as modern racial epithets) could conceivably lead to bans, but we do ask that the f-bomb be limited. I understand many of our players come from countries/societies/cultures/backgrounds where that just seems ridiculous, and there's the tired old argument about how the word has a medieaval origin and so on. However, the fact of the matter is that for many people it is immersion breaking, and also for many people it is a distinctly more offensive word than it may be for you.
So, in the interests of not getting bogged-down by this issue, and concentrating on more important stuff, we ask that people limit the use of this word and try to avoid it.
Damn, I live in Brooklyn, the F-bomb flows from my like water from a stream...
Not to make light of people that it offends, I don't use it in game, cause I find it breaks immersion even for me if I was to use it. Too, well, Brooklyn...
I didn't mean to suggest spelling things differently to get around the rules. I just meant that it would be cool if we had a whole other set of EFU explatives.
We have a pretty rich vocabulary to work with. Lets celebrate our language with some more inventive insults - try some of these :

Why not stick a few choice ones in a quickslot?
The F word is pretty dull anyhow - this is often a game of words so lets have fun with 'em you misbegotten plume-plucked pumpions!
"Your mother was a deep pig and your father smelt of excrement!"
Your mother was a rothe in heat and your father was a pantsless rogue with the Oppourtunist feat.
When I played Cola she developed quite the sailor's mouth, but I always tried to limit the F-bomb to once in every 20 curses. Sometimes a little more often in times of stress. I think the breaking of immersion is a personal failing of whosoever loses it, but that's just my thought.
IxTheSpeedy Damn, I live in Brooklyn, the F-bomb flows from my like water from a stream...
My God, you can play in an EfU-like environment each day, live! :D
Or you could take a page out of Mal Reynolds book and just swear in Chinese.
Or we could create our own cusses. It is, after all, a fictional world. You could even type gibberish and claim to be swearing in elven, if the DMs approve of that, given the language rules!
kingcod: that link is awesome, I think you just changed how my characters express themselves forever...
First of all, I would like to direct your attention to http://youtube.com/view_play_list?p=D25046A07D0637B6
Greatest series of YouTube vids I've ever seen. Period.
Second of all, it does tick me off to no end to come from school, where I hear an F-Bomb a minute, to my refuge of solitude and find it polluted. I generally send people angry tells when this happens, and the responses are mixed.
Bannable offense, no. However, for the sake of those who really hate this, just don't do it. There are alternatives. Like for instance, German swear words! For exampe: S*****e!
Something else to consider ...do you think you would ever hear elminster say "fuck" or "Shitface" I mean really think about it such words wouldnt exist in Toril. I mean from a roleplay perspective at least be inventive and try something like :creepy piano music: "This is your Final Hour"...
Actually, as one of the only (or the only?) character to have been to our present day world, yes, I do think Elminster could say this.

Fiction and Fantasy two seperate things Elminster dont exisit in the real world ; quote me one instance from dnd books and I mean "dnd" not some thrown together excuse and we are dealing in the (fantasy) world of Toril. If there is to be Tolerance of obscene language so be it but its not ganna be a one way thing and when you are dealing in negativety expect there to be chaos and mud thrown on the "art" of roleplay...as its crap and belongs in the gutter.

*Edit*
Some characters will say "shit". If those characters say "shit," you are roleplaying those characters as saying "shit".
I don't see how it makes roleplaying any less of what it is.
Interesting feedback well the powers that be have ruled on the subject so im just going to go with the flow and take things as they come bro's ...sweet as :).
I was staying silent for this thread, deciding that I would rather see the opinions of the other players, so that I may keep in mind their opinions when playing with them In-Game. However, in the spirit of cooperation, I'll throw in my two cents so that others can know where I stand when dealing with me on these issues.
There are various degrees of what I'm content to hear on this server. I'm all for your characters filling a niche in the world, and making your vocabulary accentuate and define the corresponding elements of a character. I have vehemently oppose anyone's attempt to filter, or orchestrate another characters vernacular. However, on the flip side, there are many good ways to see those nitches filled without resorting to tarnishing the server with the current and distinctly modern 'fad' involving both the misuse and overuse of certain curse words today.
That said, I wholeheartedly embrace any word's used to create an atmosphere and appropriate reactions to a situation; including those word that may offend our more delicate audience.
What Ebok said. I don't get offended by bad language at all, but appreciate those that make an effort to be creative in their insults.
Harsh language accentuates certain characters, but we should be careful of people's sensibilities!

Yes, we should. Think of the children!

Word.
I don't mind the language much, but I seldom use it myself. For a while it seemed like an incredibly popular trend for every character in Lower to say "feck" every other word, which was kind of tiresome just from seeing it so often. There was a day when I was greeted by the exact same response of "Th'feck you want?" from five different PCs in the span of two hours in response to my attempts to start a conversation. Although pretty funny, it did start to get old.
I've always thought the f-bomb was rather stale. This encourages creativity! :D
I find variations of the ubiquitous 'F' word to be far more annoying.
hobgoblin panty sniffer
I think that we should be creative with cusses, so for example, I usually use 'Frack', from old Battlestar Galactica, but I DO use Damn on occasion, since technecally, it isn't a cuss. (at least I don't think it is...)
I'm of mind that if you're going to say it, then just say it.
Just, like.. Not too much, k?
Get some imagination and quit worrying whether you can curse.
Seriously.
If you can't roleplay w/o unimaginative curse words, maybe you should consider how much you like playing here.
I hate to sound so harsh, but come on. Really.
