A fancy looking letter to the council

Greetings. It is always appropriate for a foreign dignitary to announce his presence when in another country, failure to do so is a crime in many lands, Thay being one of them.

I hereby extend formal greetings and friendship to the Nation of Sanctuary on behalf of the Empire of Thay.

Now lets be blunt and get to business. I am not one for formalities when they interfere with business. I am damn glad to stumble upon your city as I stumbled around the under dark. I am well aware the reputation our homeland has in most of the world and it has been far worse in the past, so it has likely lagged a bit down here. Thay has undergone a self motivated revolution of thinking over the last several decades and all military conquest has given way to economic expansion since we are obviously the most experienced people in the world in matters of commerce.

If you are not aware, we are not in fact evil undead crafting, demon fornicating bastards, well most of us are not anyway.

I intend to make my stay as short as possible. I intend to figure out what I need to do to get out of here and then leave with those who assist me. Before you fret, sacrificing the secrecy of sanctuary with massive uses of magic is not an acceptable route of exit. The main purpose of this letter was to make you aware of that fact.

I obviously have to say this because to say otherwise would likely get me stoned, however I can assure you I mean it because on a purely practical basis, when I report the existence of sanctuary to my superiors, I will receive a massive and instant promotion and enough gold to make this hellish nightmare worth the while. If sanctuary is detected and destroyed, I gain no benefit. There is a massive potential market for under dark goods and I am sure sanctuary would like the magical expertise of the Empire of Thay to bolster the cities defense, as well as the surface trade goods we can supply.

Once I leave, a more formal and permanent ambassador will be sent to maintain permanent relations between the nation of Sanctuary and the Empire of Thay.

I can be contacted at any inn.

Mister Kharant,

While I know nothing of Thay, the fact you are quick to dismiss what these must be stereotypes has inspired me to do some research of my own. Regardless of this, I will only judge a man based on who he is as an individual.

Concerning escape, I imagine if you find a way many would be interested in following you. Especially if it's safe. If the route is risk free, it may be enough to simply transport every citizen out.

Lastly, concerning your notices, I think we should speak personally so you might explain what exactly you're seeking to do that warrants ordering about freemen as if they are property.

I look forward to our meeting.

Sincerely,

Ivandur Reynolt

I will be finding you in short order so I can answer any and all questions that you have as well as clear up any misunderstandings.
