PETITION - fastened to the door of the Town Hall

Fellow citizens,

Last dark I witnessed a sad ending for a troubled soul. The dwarf Glebur was executed justly for his crimes, according to the laws of Sanctuary. Though I do not agree with the sentence, it is the law and it should be respected by all citizens.

The true loss here is that of this criminal's soul. I attempted repeatedly to politely ask for a few moments to hear the confession of this individual, and was treated indifference and even contempt by several members of the Watch and the Spellguard.

I ask you, is it justice to deny salvation to the condemned? The shoddy treatment I received is of no matter, but it reflects a barbaric savagery and a lack of regard for the right of one to make peace with the gods before they face their sentencing.

Here I place this petition, in the hope that the Council might see the good that can be wrought in just a few minutes by those entrusted by the gods to represent them here on this plane.

I do formally ask that all prisoners be allowed the decency of making a last confession if they so choose in the presence of law enforcement officials and under full custody.

No added risk is assumed, and the reward of a soul saved might be gained. Sign this petition then, if you would see our justice tempered with mercy, and the clergy allowed to do the will of your gods by allowing all condemned criminals a few moments with a person of faith if they so wish.

While I personally believe it is a Priest's duty to find criminals before they've come to the point of execution-

AND

That there are numerous chance before a criminal is too far gone he can redeem himself, and in that sense, Justice should be served regardless.

That said however, I see little problem with allowing a priest five minutes with a condemned man, so long as there is a watchman present

I would most greatly agree with you in this matter.

A note is made. If you catch it feel free to allow it to confess. Without interupting both the watchmen and councilor putting the fecker on trial.

A criminal's mortal life may be forfeit because of their actions, but final absolution is preferable to eternal damnation, to allow them to atone for their actions in service to a beneficent deity.

Written beside it:

I do not know who wrote this poorly phrased statement, but it is gibberish and profane. I made repeated attempts to speak privately with the suspect, and a contemptuous dwarven private and Spellguard agent responded as if I were a fly circling a pile of dung - telling me to shoo!

This is a petition. If you do not agree, do not sign it.

If these people are truly repentant, then they deserve to be given a chance to speak of their sins.

*The following response is written in easily readable blocky letters, the ink is black.*

What you are suggesting is a fine idea, and I personally must agree that if a condemned criminal wishes to make peace with the gods, then he should be granted that dying wish. However if the criminal is acting in a continuously rude, and unapproachable matter, then this final gift should be stripped from them for unwillingness to accept such a kindhearted gesture.

There should be a little care in taking what priests are called to this duty. If I am the only one available and a Beshaban whoreson wishes to praise his faith before he dies instead of rightfully revoking his worship of that dammable god, I will not be pleased.

~Every priest of the helping hand.

Ample time to confess and repent is given both in the cell and in the stoning cage. The dwarf in question spat in the face of justice and refused to repent, even moments before his death!

-- AGENT MILLER

Confession and absolution in faith should be granted, even if the body needs to be condemned for crimes.
