errr, why?

The animals that you summon are not killed by the trap, but are instantly dispelled back to their home plane when they take "lethal" damage.

Boss- If that's the case, then I stand corrected.

Here's some canon information, much of how these spells worked was hashed out in Planescape rule books.

Basically, a summon spell grabs a being from another plane, transports it to your plane. When the spell ends or the creature "dies" it returns to its plane.

There are alternate rules for summons even that you can always summon the same creature, and even give it weapons and armor and summon it again later with the equipment you gave it--for advanced conjurers at least.

The creatures you summon however, *do* retain their memories of how you used them. So, using them cruelly and inflicting pain on them may anger them if they have the power to eventually come after you.

I'm sure cruel treatment will anger a god, but using them to go after traps is roughly the same as using them in battle.

Maybe?

I'll confirm, although I do not necessarily agree that using summoned creatures to set off traps is no more cruel than using them in battle. In battle, the creature in question has a chance to defend itself, whereas for setting off traps the creature is being outright abused by the caster.

What if the caster sees the trap but the way the animal follows the caster has no way around it?

What if the caster doesn't see the trap, but doesn't step on it but the summon does?

The question is when you're deliberately summoning creatures to set off traps. You're not accountable for other people getting themselves killed through no actions of yours.
