QuickQuestion V 2.0

Rangers get spells, this much we all know. I also know that a correct deity is required for said spells. However, I've no idea when a ranger actually 'gets' his spells. I seem to have this vague idea that it's around level five, but I don't know for sure. If someone could clear this up for me, I would be grateful.

Yes, I know this. I suppose my question should be, more specifically, what the zeroes in the chart mean. If they simply mean you don't get any of those spells, why do they not simply leave it blank as they did in the previous levels? Yes, I 'am' dense.

I typed up a nice explanation but then my connection died. The short is that a 11 wisdom ranger will get spells at 6, a 12 wisdom ranger will get spells at 4 and 6, a 14 wisdom ranger will get 1st circle spells at 4 and 6, but will also get a 2nd level spell at 8.

It's all there, if you care to search a bit.

Yes, but those are bonus spells. I seek the level at which a Ranger can first cast a spell at all.

Level 4, if you have a minimum of 12 wisdom.

Okay, okay, yes! I get all that, but really, at the bottom of it all, WHEN DO RANGERS GET SPELLS?

Not to hijack the thread-

But -HOW- do rangers get spells?

Druids have oaths and such.

Do Rangers just pray like clerics?

Or is there some initiation?

Rangers get their spells from eating spinach.

Oroborous Okay, okay, yes! I get all that, but really, at the bottom of it all, WHEN DO RANGERS GET SPELLS?

Sarcasm duly noted, Oro.

But as LaBrea said, the level at which you gain the ability to cast spells is related to your wisdom modifier.

If you have 12 wisdom (+1 modifier) you will get a bonus spell slot. Meaning that where in that chart it says '0', you will actually get a '1'. Therefor you get to cast level 1 spells at ranger level 4 instead of the typical progression and having to wait till ranger level 6.

If you have 14 wis (+2 modifier) you'll gain the ability to cast level 2 spells sooner also (at level 8 instead of level 10) because you get a bonus spell slot for level two spells.

The higher the wisdom modifier, the more bonus spells you get, but you only get one bonus slot per spell level.

12 Wis (+1) = 1 extra level 1 spell 14 Wis (+2) = 1 extra level 2 spell in addition to the above 16 Wis (+3) = 1 extra level 3 spell in addition to the above etc, etc...

These do not stack! Meaning that just because you have 16 Wis (+3), that doesn't mean you get 3 extra level 1 spells. It means you qualify for the bonus spell at level 1 and level 2 and level 3 separately.

This progression of ability modifiers granting spells earlier and bonus slots also works the same way for Paladins as well. Though I don't think it works this way for any other spellcasting class (Cleric, Wizard, Sorc, Bard, Druid). The the case of those classes, the ability modifier simply makes the DC of their spells much higher and thus more difficult for an opponent to resist either by dice roll save or spell resistance.

I'm going to actually explain how to read the tables, since all spellcasters use them.

The spells per day table only lists base spells per day. You have to read them as spells per day + bonus spells from relevant spellcasting ability score. You can find the number of bonus spells per day in the table in the link Szgk posted. That means if the base spells per day table says you get 0 spells per day (such as L4 ranger), you can still get bonus spells from a sufficiently high spellcasting ability score (12 Wis).

Okay, I get that, but when do Rangers get magic?

Don't you just love it when people answer your question factually, and without sarcasm? Truly helpful.

Snot, my thanks.

As for the rest of you...

Hugs! *mutters* Happy place... remember what the man in the white coat said.

Okay, I'm just going to make this my eternal dumping-spot for quick questions. Also, I know IRC can be used for such things, but it's blocked at my school. Yes, even the browser version.

Question: Beshaba's favored weapon is listed as a scourge, or a barbed scourge. Might I take it that this is a whip, or might it be a flail?

I eagerly await the answer.

Whip.

Yet another. Yes, I am ignorant. Are there monk gloves in the server? Because I've not seen many monks, and no monk gloves at all, and believe that perhaps it has not been a priority in the past, as there weren't any monks.

Or, perhaps I haven't looked hard enough for either monks or their gloves.

Look harder.

Monks and monk gloves are around, definately!

DMs might also reward well played Monks with their own gloves! Who knows, its happened before.

Halfbrood, you have given me hope. Now, how are monks generally RPed? Code, discipline, training and so on I know. I'm playing a sort of amnesiac monk at the moment, so it might be a bit out of the ordinary. Hmmm.

There are definitely some pretty nice gloves/gauntlets that I've seen from time to time. Monks are a little rarer than fighters, rogues, and wizards on this server, but that makes complete sense. How many people would choose the monk lifestyle and stick with it long enough to really qualify as true monks? It seems like something that would be pretty rare.

The monk class also carries a lot of RP expectations with it. Relative to other classes, it just seems like monks are harder to figure out motivations for (that might just be a problem I have, though).

You would need to app to be an official member of one of the canon monastic orders, but you could RP to a similar theme without being a member of an order.

Generally I find the lawful aspect of monks the most interesting. Pick a few key points of ritual/belief/dogma/self-improvement that your monk believes in vehemently and commit their entire being to those key points.

And yet another tiny question that will probably lead to a page and a half of discussion:

How do I explore without dying?

To expand, I would like tips about non-lethal exploration. I frequently hear about awesome quests and cool areas, but have no idea where they are. What direction is Traensyr in? Where is this fabled ice elemental? How many dozens of quests are out there, waiting to be found and beaten? All questions I would like to answer myself, but don't want to risk my life on. Survivaly tips are appreciated, and yes, I do know about that topic I wrote two weeks ago. And nobody mention invis potions. Other than that, the floor is open.

Best tip:

Go out with people and explore.

And ignore the tip where people say "Go in stealth or invisible."

Hire a guide. >_>
