Letter to P.I. Asen

P.I. Asen,

Your drive is impressive. Rarely is it that I find such boldness in men, particularly in Lower. I write to announce that I fully support your efforts in the Fortress, but I have some suggestions that I believe must be attended.

Firstly, I would not entitle the claim of the Barracks to The Watcher alone, for despite my support of his work, I work for Lord Ilmater. Please, suit my own needs and those of others and consider changing the name into a more secularized one. I would suggest "The Guardians", and the "Guardian Fortress". Or perhaps "Triadian Guard" to suit the mighty trinity. I can elaborate on reasons why in person, if you would like to address this further.

Second, I have been around Lower for many months now. My name, my deeds, are all known fairly well. I can publically endorse you, if you wish for me to do so. Additionally, I can seek to have Winston, another of Lower's leaders to endorse you as well. Perhaps even the Hoarans, although they have withdrawn into their fortress temple for the most part.

I hope to speak with you soon, and may the Three be with us both.

Painbearer of Lord Ilmater Protector of Lower Sanctuary

[A missive left for Lucius]

Luke,

I do not serve the Triad, and frankly I believe the Triad have little business in matters of defense. Governance, perhaps, as Tyr would ideally be represented in all courts, but The Watcher serves as a god known for protecting the weak, and persecuting those who harm the weak. Such is what Lower needs.

That said however, I shall allow non-helmites to join the ranks, however they will not be allowed Advancement beyond a certain point, as I wish to have a Helmite force, though different opinions are always welcomed. Let us say, for the sake of Argument, as the ranks would be Myself, Two Lieutenants, Four Sergeants, Eight Privates, and various deputies and initiates, I would allow any non-helmite to advance to the rank of Sergeant, but My Lieutenants I expect to be able to give guidance to all those working for myself and the watcher, and as such require they be of the Helmite Faith.

As for the issue of your "Endorsement", I shall leave such to you.

I serve Helm. I do his Work. People will accept such, or they will not. I've no qualms with either.

If you feel it will help, you are free to do as you wish, though I will not ask.

- Paladin Adept Asen

Lower needs all the help it can get. There aren't enough Helmites in this city to suit your needs, I'm afraid. And I don't think you'd argue that you're not exactly working towards converting anyone. Be reasonable, remember the limitations of others.

Perhaps I'm wrong, and I do not offer this question as rhetoric, but true questioning: Would it not further Helm's goals to alter the name, allowing more of the faithful and like mind to join you? There aren't enough of us around, and there certainly aren't enough Helmites. Open the doors a little more. Do what you will in Helm's name, this is fine, but allow others to help by changing the name and removing these unneccessary barriers.

My apologies for my continued reference to Helm as a member of the Triad. It is a fact though that we have worked well together in this city over the past few months, Helmites and Ilmateri; in fact, it was Mister Dakur of the Helmite shrine that had held onto and returned my Silver Brotherhood of Ilmater armor. Hence, I often and apparently mistakenly, associate Helm into our fold. It is an effect of culture.

Lucius

Lucius,

Helm and Ilmater, while going through different means, seek similar goals, this is true, Yes.

I shall take into consideration your "Opening door" policy, However I will not be changing the name. I may add an "And Friends", or "As well as Associates", or some such, but The Helmite barracks will serve as a symbol, much as one would label a shrine or temple, and I believe the name of Helm holds much power in resting the fears of the weak that wander the streets. "The Guardians', while slightly more catchy, sounds as if it could be one of various groups. There is no doubt, no question, of what the Helmite Barracks and Garrison hold. Protection for the weak, Justice for the guilty.

"Helmite Barracks and Guardian Garrison", would be a compromise I suppose.

I still believe The List from Vincent would be useful, Especially after seeing how hostile and corruptive Jars was. But as you said, that is his choice to make. Though you are quite persuasive. Let us call it "A return of the favor for attempting to sever my ties to this plane"

-Paladin Adept Asen

How about "The Guardian Garrison" and we put in a shrine to Helm for you? The people of Lower have been harassed many times by misguided zealots of deities both benevolent and malicious. Earn their trust over time, and being so bold will help promote your Lord. Bo so bold too soon, such as immediately, and they will fearfully shirk away from what they should openly embrace out of ignorance.

It is a matter of long-term and short-term.

Lucius

There is already a Shrine of the Watcher, So there is little need to put one within the Barracks.

The Guardian Garrison shall serve, however.

- Master Guardian Asen, Paladin Adept of Helm

Fantastic. I will begin recruiting immediately. We ought discuss in person about structure and such. I've actually written down a few thoughts about it down, things from before I had even made your aquaintance; it may prove useful.

Anyways, I'll speak with you tomorrow and let this poor child rest so he need not run letters between our rooms any longer.

Lucius

[The child looks quite bedraggled]

Very Well
