Letter to the House of Light; Copied to Council

This is an official notice from the Spellguard about a situation of rising seriousness. The House of Light serves an admirable function in Sanctuary aiding many of those least able to afford its services. The Spellguard and many members of the Council obviously approve of your efforts.

Therefore, it will be a terrible shame if the actions of the House of Healing continue to cause trouble for not only the Council and with the Spellguard, but for the entire city of Sanctuary. During the dangerous situation facing our city with the drow knucklebones the House of Light has been involved in some extremely suspicious and blatantly dangerous acts.

One, the House of Light secretly gathered several knucklebones without alerting any member of a civil defense league or informing the entire Council. Despite the clear danger the possession of these bones has presented to our entire city. The fire that swept through Lower Sanctuary was linked to the drow and caused the death of forty people. Every day the bones are not returned to Traensyr, ten slaves are murdered in that city with an exponential increase daily. Meanwhile, the drow build up an expeditionary force that threatens to attack Sanctuary and slaughter all of us without exception.

Two, one Dell, a representative of the House of Light has twice been jointly arrested for refusing to cooperate with the Spellguard or the Watch in this investigation. His hyperbolic and groundless insults againt both institutions are baseless and distracting from a serious danger. Worse though is his blatant refusal to cooperate or share any information with those people legally authorized to handle this investigation while maintaining that the House of Light is somehow granted this authority by a Councilor--even worse are his insinuations that he has been instructed or counselled to refuse cooperation at the behest of a Councilor. Clearly, his lies reflect poorly on the Councilor he claims told him to disobey our laws.

Three, the House of Light while secretly hoarding four of the Knucklebones from the Spellguard, the Watch, and the Council in full managed to actually lose one of the bones in their illegal care. If not for their lack of security in this matter, the first two issues would have been moot points. The Spellguard would have located all six of the bones, and the danger could then have been faced directly and put to an end. In the Spellguard's attempts to claim the last bones, especially the one lost supposedly to a drow, the refusal of the House of Light to cooperate fully has already cost lives in Traensyr daily while putting the lives of every man, woman, and child in Sanctuary at risk.

Therefore, the Spellguard is now asking the Council to look into this matter and consider a suitable consequence for the House of Light and its members who have acted in highly intolerable manners. Furthermore, the Council was previously asked jointly by members of the militia and the Spellguard for the authority to make refusing to cooperate with these investigations serious crimes mandatory and capital upon authorization of the Council. Jointly, we wish to remind the Council of this request. Finally, the authority to make the possession of these knucklebones unless duly authorized a capital crime will make the return of the final bones occur far more quickly.

Agent Hectra Spellguard

[A copy sent to all involved]

Agent Hectra,

Gathering the bones was never actually illegal as there are not any laws against doing so, that is not to say however, that gathering them without informing the Spellguard or Watch was unreasonable and perhaps rash from your perspective. Representatives from the Tigereyes have also told me this fire was possibly started by the Red Smiles, something I'm more prone to believe as the fire originated near their "Territory".

The House of Light only ever held three bones, which were briefly lost and then recovered after a failed assassination attempt, something the Spellguard or Watch did little to investigate into aside from a few harsh and bitter threats from a Spellguard Agent. Concerning these allegations of a Councilor giving them permission to refuse cooperation; I have already spared you the details on my behalf, I suggest you include them in future reports, unless there's another Councilor giving them these orders.

It is unfortunate that much of Sanctuary has a good deal of distrust for the Spellguard, the House of Light included. It's further unfortunate that the Spellguard sees fit to endorse Necromancy and the animation of the undead, going as far to participate in it simply becase there aren't any laws against it regardless of any morality involved. It is unfortunate that such immoral and questionable actions by the Spellguard do little to improve their already questionable reputation, and I believe it is this distrust towards the Spellguard that has -good- and -honest- citizens of this city hesitating to come to them when it concerns the safety of this city for they truly doubt the Spellguard has that interest at heart. It's my opinion that the House of Light considered this, specifically the Spellguard's condoning of animation of the dead, before handing over the knuckle-bones of a Lich to your organisation.

That said, if all had gone as you wished it to, how would we truly know the Spellguard would have all six acquired by now? The fact of the matter is -one- individual without 30% of this city's funding was able to do half of your task in acquiring the Knucklebones. To me this looks like an attempt to reap the hard work of individuals while attempting to shift the blame of failure over their heads.

I am all too willing to work with the Spellguard with the hopes of improving their reputation within Sanctuary to something with perhaps a bit more integrity and honor, though I doubt most of your agents would be willing to work with me given their past history of extreme animosity towards me. I will speak with the House of Light and remind them that regardless of what they feel about our defense organisations that they should still be respected, and if they feel corruption runs deep that they should seek to remove it through legal means.

Sincerely,

Councilor Reynolt

[Addressed to the Council. Copy sent to the Spellguard]

I write in response to a recent missive by one Agent Hectra of the Sanctuary Spellguard. Specifically, I would like to address the many false accusations and lies about the House of Light and myself.

Firstly, the Agent claims that the House of Light "secretly gathered several knucklebones without alerting any member of a civil defense league or informing the entire Council." This is a blatant falsehood. The Council was informed of our possession of these knucklebones, one of which was even carried by a member of the Council. Also, during the surgical extraction of a bone from one of the former slaves who carried them, members of both the Council and Spellguard were present.

Secondly, Agent Hectra states in her letter that I made some sort of claim that I and the House of Light were authorized by the Council to refuse to cooperate with the Spellguard. I made no such claim. I simply informed both Agents Hectra and Delgado, when they attempted to question me through intimidation rather than polite converstaion, that everything I know about the knucklebones had already been reported to Councilor Reynolt. I am hardly responsible if the Spellguard refuse to work in unison with the Council.

Thirdly, none of the bones that were in possession of the House of Light were ever lost as the Agent claims, though they may have changed hands within our membership, and all of those are now in possession of the Spellguard. One would think they would be appreciative of the work done to gather them.

I beseech the Council now to monitor the Spellguard closely in this matter, and make them accountable for the status of the knuckbones at all times. Knowing that several of its members practice necromancy, and that they already hold a caged demon within their compound, I would hate to think they might attempt to actually use the knuckbones to bring the drow lich back into existence.

As to Agent Hectra's demand that punitive measures be taken against the House of Light, I request that any action the Council be directed at myself personally and not the House in general. The House of Light is dedicated to the health, protection, and well being of the people of Sanctuary, and I would its good works continued unimpaired.
