Skyboxes

I know my way around the toolset and adding skyboxes is no big deal. Since EFU doesnt use them I thought I'd ask you guys, can you overide a skybox in? And if so, anyone have a good one they like? A pic would be a plus too ;)

That would be pretty far out, maybe having a cave-y stalagtite skybox. The only thing that would concern me about an override skybox is that you'd either have to somehow tell the override specifically which areas to affect, or to have it in all the areas. I don't know if the Rock Bottom would especially suit that, for one. But if you could get it to work, hoo doggy.

Sounds like a good idea, but i dont think they'll impliment it, too much work for so little gain.

Personally, I like having just plain darkness over our heads... Especially around Sanctuary, it makes it feel like you're wandering around in a huge dark vault, probably just what the DMs want.

Overides, are clientside...ie; only you see them. Skyboxes are added via the toolset, however, to see them you have to also enable the skyboxes in your graphics options as well. The idea is to add it via overide, so that I am not foisting my personal preferences on others. I do like and think that some areas ought to have darkness above, some stalagtites, and some..well..whatever you prefer. To avoid the use of a HAK file this would likely need to be an overide item, but without skyboxes enabled serverside, this may be a bit tough...thus my asking the collective NWN knowledge here that is the palyerbase/ DMs.

Again, thus the use of an overide. It may or may not be a DM preference. NWN/ HotU/ SoU have only a few skyboxes none of which are of a suitable use here. There are no stock cavern interiors skyboxes nor underdark ones. You could have a cavern cieling in your overide that replaces a stock skybox and enable it serverside, the drawback is it would require -everyone- who plays here to do that...either that or you'll wind up with blue skies over your well done underdark...not good. Even worse would be new players who haven't even looked at the forums. They'd come here and say OMFG what n00bZ teh Sk1es are sunny?!? [logs and goes somewhere else]

Besides...the only underdark one I have seen is this http://nwvault.ign.com/fms/Image.php?id=10218 which I dont really like anyway ;)

Agreed Sedarine, that Underdark skybox looks like crap.

I think it's good not to have any skyboxes in the Underdark. Just darkness above you, that's the stuff. Fits the mood. Yes, I know there could be luminicient fungi or whatever, but darkness is much better. Scarier, lonelier (is that even a word?) and makes me feel like the character really is Under the Dark.

Hehehehe.

Exactly the point I was trying to make! 8)

Points all taken, I think the darkness is good for some places. Yet some spots would be good with a ceiling, unfortunately they are 2D maps, maybe our beloved NWN2 will bring me a fix ;) If you have ever experienced the DLA sewers tileset you'll know what I mean about what a well done ceiling can be though.

In fact, here's what I mean...

This one is great for the mines/ caverns...it could likely be recolored and used for the underdark...if you can overide without skyboxes enabled serverside... http://nwvault.ign.com/fms/Image.php?id=7693

Seeing those pictures, I've got to admit they look pretty good. I rarely get down to that level with my camera, so I miss all that stuff anyway.

<makes mental note to look around down there more often>

Back in the day I used to play on ALFA a lot. Their Shadowdale server has skyboxes put in, only, everyone ended up having to turn them off as soon as they logged on because of added lag.

Lag=bad. I'm not sure skyboxes are worth it. At least on that server they were responsible for a fair amount of it.

DO NOT USE THE CAVE ROOFER OVERRIDE WITH EFU...

I was using it and consistantly crashed at the Blue Moon Inn. I played with the tileset and the override set, and found that if the Transition Door is placed in a corner (as it is in the Blue Moon), it will cause your NWN client to crash.

I reported it on The Vault, but until I read that its been fixed, I am staying away from the override, even though it makes the caves and mines so much cooler.

Thanks for the heads up Leurnid, I don't currently use the overide version. I have tried out the HAK version, and liked it though. Maybe I'll do you a favor and see if I can duplicate the crash. I can do it hazard free. I like the JoneSoft mod enabler, its a simple utility that allows you to install mods, or multiple mods to any game. The way it works is quite easy. Unzipped to the NWN folder and run once it will create a mods folder. From there I would make a folder called "cave cieling (or a name that would help you remember what it does)" and then inside that another folder called override. Drop all the override stuff from the Cave cielings override in that folder....and boom, almost done. Run the mod enabler to enable my "cave ceilings (or the name you chose)" and the mod enabler goes in that folder and copies all the files to the override (the folder I pointed it too) just prior to this it creates a backup. Disable the mod with the mod enabler and it restores the folder(s) using the backup...no harm, no crashes ;) It's great for games when you are using multiple mods and can't be certain of conflicts.
