coming in as a faithless

If you come into the game as a faithless can you convert and decide to worship a deity?

If you can convert, could you then become a priest or another class that casts divine spells?

Seems like you should be able to.

Thanks

Fictionally that would make sense, I guess if DM feels the character has really changed faith.

Yes, on both accounts.

This can be especially interesting if other PCs do the converting.

I really encourage others to do so, but what would be even better was that if PCs would actually ALLOW themselves to BE converted. Here's once more a reminder that Dungeons and Dragons uses a Polytheistic atmosphere, and that having a Patron deity does not mean that it's the only God you worship.

Err.. what?

Vincent has quite a few converts, I've found if you make a good enough point, people will be inclined to think your god is all super.

It's all a matter of how you rp it, I guess. Just make your god look to be all super and great, and you're set! Show people what they stand to gain!

It doesn't really matter how 'super' your God is, Bull's Strength still gives 1d4+1 temporary Strength. Game-term wise, each God is equally powerful.

Instead, try to just be an awesome minister/ preacher/ priest, so people will WANT to be around you and in your following. Don't just drop spells on someone, or do the 'Do you accept the blessings' thing, but make them offer a prayer to your God first. If they don't, it's easy - Those who give prayer receive spells, and those who don't, don't.

Kneeling, praying, offering a small token of sacrifice, each faith can have a different approach to worship:

A Priest of Kossuth might desire someone to throw an object, perhaps a single gold coin, into a brazier of flames.

A Priest of Shar might want the subject to put on a blindfold, because only Shar can guide you in the dark.

A Priest of Umberlee might want you to take a drink of salt water, to represent Umberlee's power over the drowning.

Really, the examples are limitless, and even inter-faith rituals may differ - Not all cults, sects or segregrated temples or even priests might do the same thing. Use your imagination!

1) A reminder that not all people who worship deities are given spells. A new convert that has high wisdom and/or charisma, if they choose so, yes they can have spells.

2) And the clerical spells are like prayers, but are not in fact prayers. Any one can ask a deity for help, the point of divine spells, however, is that you are persuading more powerful beings to give you magic, or that you are wise enough to understand from where the magic is coming and to not be fooled into false power.
