Nailed About Upper

A sermon on a just city and a lost city.

Tomorrow after the hour of the second meal; outside Town Hall.

Stantin Imphalitur Monk of Ilmater

(An Ilmateri sermon, delivered February 1, 11 AM EST)

(The original notes are replaced by the following sermon.)

How different is Sanctuary from the holds of drow? I fear, not very.

Our city's library holds texts with the holy teachings of Cyric, when such should find itself burned and held out of site of honest folk; studied only by appointed guardians who must know our foes to fight them. The drow too hold unholy texts, teaching profane religion in their libraries.

The drow are known to hack and chop at the limbs of even their fallen enemies. Foolishly believing that the empty husk still is their mortal enemy, that by chopping at a corpse they can hurt the spirit that once housed it. Here too, we profane our dead-the city Watch no less impales its victims on pikes-defiling them and mocking the living while exposing us all to the unwholesome effects of disease spread by flies and rats.

Worse, a city of escape slaves, people held once to be no more than property by their masters now are growing increasingly enchanted with the idea of accumulating property. This is pursued at ever growing risk, talk of spreading trade contacts with the monsters of the Underdark, this illogic will ultimately replace the shackles that once bound us all. They will be either the iron shackles that bind us to slavery or the gold shackles that bind us to worldly goods--but you will be shackled by the things you think make you comfortable in the Underdark.

As a new election nears, consider what is truly important, just and good. You will not see it espoused by any candidates, politicians lack the temperament to tell a democratic people when they err. My people, my friends, my children, you have begun to stray.

Set aside barbarism, set aside heresy, set aside the pursuit of wordly goods.

Boycott the election, travel to the library and burn or remove unholy books that corrupt our youth, and demand the Watch cuts down the corpses they defile most evilly! Return to the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge. Only a wholesome soul can find a true escape from this darkness.
