Journal of Merrias Brandibald

2nd of Marpenoth:

I awoke today in a strange place ... a city, here in the midst of Ibrandul's darkness. I do not know what awaits me, nor who brought me in, though I likely owe them my life. The walls ... I remember seeing the walls before fatigue overtook me.

I am tired now ... I must rest. Tomorrow I will try to find who brought me here.

5th of Marpenoth:

I am not certain if I will ever find the person who brought me here, but I have met with kindness in this place. A woman named Zhaal comforted me in my weakness, and nourished me when I could not muster the strength to hunt. In the caverns I learned to go without such kindness, I thought it a worthy sacrifice for the peace the darkness offered. I am not so certain anymore. The darkness could not erase the memories of what happened to my brother, no matter how many years I wandered.

On another note ... I have learned that this city, Sanctuary, of which I now find myself a citizen, suffers. The dead are restless in their graves.

How far must I travel, Ibrandul, to be free of my brother's shadow?

14th of Marpenoth:

My fears have been called into question by another, and I do not blame them. When I beheld the chasm, something horrid awakened in my chest. My heart, so long accustomed to its slow rhythm, so long accustomed to the peace of dark passages, beat as rapidly as when I beheld my brother's ... no, I will not dwell on that.

I entered the caverns to lose that memory. As bad to raise it from the grave as to do such to unliving flesh.

15th of Marpenoth:

To my great disappointment, I discovered todark that the City Watch is reluctant to move against the forces of discordance that seek to upset the peace of these caverns. The man I spoke with seemed uninterested in discussing the issue of the restless dead that plague this city. And when I mentioned the name the girl told me, he became even more reserved.

He did, however, mention another who might share my views ... one who might be willing to facilitate the return of peace to this troubled darkness. Corporal Brinson ... that is the name he told me.

I will seek this man out in the darks to come.
