Sealed letter to Councilor Nina Sikara [DM]

Lady Councilor,

I have heard from Corporal Swift that you ordered the body of a recently executed criminal, William Pearce Danielson, to be put on a pike by the gates of the In-Between. As a Kelemvorite, it greatly troubles me that the dead should be dishonored in such a way and not burnt as should be. If an example must be made of the criminal, we have always had the stoning which makes the citizens able to take a part of the punishment of one who has greatly injured our society. The body of the criminal would then be burnt afterwards, and he would have been but a memory.

Placing the dead on a pike as some kind of horrid flag to our enemies is not only an uncultural behavior towards the dead, it is also a disturbing act which I know more than only me frown upon. We are better than this! Our society of Upper Sanctuary is a true testament to the great cities above which many of our citizens hails from. In it we are able to find the shelter and sense of home we were brutally taken away from. We have the freedom here we want, among laws we know both written and in our hearts. Don't let this be destroyed by having such a vile act contribute to the success of our laws here. It is savage, cruel and uncalled for.

As a society, we must set the example for others to follow. If we have to place the head of a particular nasty goblin, drow or duergar on one of our gates, fine and so be it. But it is no reason to put the deceased of our misguided people on the gate. I hope you will listen to my concern and have the body removed in short time. It will greatly make my occasional trips to that gate more tolerable, as well as my duty as an officer of the law.

Corporal Rodon Brinson

Corporal,

I uphold the traditions of my surface ancestors. The corpse of traitors, enemies and fools belong on pikes. Danielson is suitably dangling over the gate he attacked.

Nina
